Even if it is a weave, I think what we should at least appreciate is that it is a “natural style”. If your hair is natural, celebrate it; if others have to opt for a weave to appear to have natural hair, celebrate that, too. Hey, I know a lot of girls who tested the natural look with weaves before they gave up the “crack”.

There is nothing wrong with weaves and wigs. Let’s stop this demonization of expressions that are innate, creative, and natural. For thousands of years, people have worn all types of wigs and weaves … Africans, Europeans, Asians etc. Wigs and weaves are not the problem. The problem is when the hair textures more common to other races come to define what Black women and Black men see as appropriate, beautiful, professional, and feminine. That is what the “natural hair movement” should be about. That being said, the reference to “natural hair” must be more specific. There are many natural hair… Read more »

Right there is nothing wrong with wearing weaves, relaxers, or natural. My concern is when a young blaack lady’s self esteem rises when wearing European straight weave, and when the same young black woman seems to loose confidence when wearing her own hair. Or, the same young lady refuses to come out of her home with her own hair. As someone who wear my hair in any form I choose, relaxed. weave, short long, and natural. It’s not how you choose but do you lose who you your hair is European straight something that is 360 degrees from your own… Read more »

I agree. I also think that the reason why most black women CHOOSE to wear wigs has to do w/ self-esteem not out of choice or freedom of expression. It’s interesting how they all speak about wanting to have a different look- all looks deal w/ long straight hair. Why is it that almost no black women have a desire to change up a natural hair style look? When they choose to experiment it almost always deals w/ a look that resembles women of european descent. Why is it so difficult to admit that the usage of weave/wigs is indocrination… Read more »

Correction: Jada Pinkett Smith’s band, Wicked Evolution (previously called Wicked Wisdom), is a metal band, not a rock band. They are too completely different genres.

/pedantic rant over

She looks great though and tends to look natural when performing with her amazing band. Thanks for posting this photo of a black woman in a metal band. We need more support in the genre and we need more support for metal (and rock) music amongst our black brothers and sisters.

Hi Liz! How are you? I don’t know what songs you listened to, but they are a metal band. That’s the thing I love about metal. It’s so versatile that non-metalheads often don’t realise they are listening to metal. Here’s a video of them performing at Download 2006. Download is a annual metal festival in the UK and the organisers are very strict about making sure that the bands that perform there are metal, since a lot of metalheads can be very snobbish and hard to please when it comes to music. I somewhat agree with some of the above comments, however, I think it is asinine to assume that a woman who is uncomfortable with coming out of the house without it pressed or with a weave does so because she is in search of a style more identifiable with a European texture. Complete b.s. How about the woman is uncomfortable with her hair because she is uncomfortable with herself? Or maybe she just prefers that. There are many instances and styles when I prefer my straight hair over my natural texture and I couldn’t look or come off white if… Read more »

There is nothing wrong with Blacks wearing straight hair or believing that a certain hair style looks best on you, however, the problem lies in “the why” behind “the what”. The “why” is critical. If revealing one’s naturally kinky hair brings about shame, that is a huge problem. No matter what kind of styles they choose, how many White are ashamed of their naturally straighter hair? How many White men prefer White women to wear hair uncommon to Whites? Our attitudes towards our hair is a reflection of our attitudes towards our origins and each other. We can deny it,… Read more »

WOW! Perfectly stated. If we knew “better”, we’d do better, but unfortunately from as early as we can recall, from childhood we’ve been conditioned to believe (intentionally or conseqentialy) that the white “way”, is the right/better way. It’s time to teach our young girls it’s regal to resemble in skin tone/hair texture Queens of ages ago, and our young boys that it is natural to be attracted to such characteristics. If we never left our place of origin, that’s the only example of beauty we’d know…

Growing up in the late 70’s was a confusing time for me. My aunts and my sister wore false eye lashes and fake afro puffs and afros. Now it’s long straight or curly wavy wigs or weaves, nothing really has changed. It starts from within and what I saw, experienced, and embraced I became, I’m still in therapy.

Hey question. What if a woman comes off looking older (like ten years older) when they wear their own hair. But look younger with straight longer styles. That’s my friends excuse, but I actually agree with her. She looks way older with her own short curly hair. So some people have numerous and understandable excuses.

I am saying that not everyone within a socio-racial group has the exact same textured hair. I am saying that, whether her hair is real or fake, it looks great. I am saying that the texture hair she has is in these pics is not the texture that is socio-historically considered “innappropriate,” (or whatever adjective you want to use) in the post-colonial world. I guess what I am trying to say is that personally I am becoming more and more desensitized to distinguishing hair types among my own race group (African American’s). It seems I am seeing more and more AA women wearing there hair natural, at work, mall, school and at the gym. We compliment each other, ask questions, rock different styles. I get what Stephanie is saying. Not sure why people are disliking the comments? Jada’s hair is the kind of hair that has always been deemed “acceptable” within the black community. Women with this kind of hair texture are usually mixed but it’s not always a rule of course. However, some girls with this kind of hair tend to relax it or straighten it and that’s their way of hiding behind their hair. As opposed to the weave option which tends to be the option that people with coarser hair have chosen.

You are not making any sense. Afro-textured hair is an umbrella term for hair that grows out of someone’s hair who is of African descent/mixed etc.. This does not mean that textures are going to be the exact copy on every persons head. It also sounds like you make the assumption that all Europeans are of pure European blood, so it is likely that a white person who has very curly hair could have along the their lineage some African blood. Do some research into the African presence in Europe (before Slavery).
