I’m Laurene, a full-time graduate student by day and night and the style/fashion blogger of It’s Elle D’ in between. I was born in Ghana, I live and have lived in Maryland mostly since. I live in Baltimore now.
What is your style philosophy?
If you feel you’re trying to hard, reassess. Mostly though my style philosophy is my life philosophy: Be yourself, Let yourself (try new things) and first impressions open door (your attitude keeps them open).
I would say I’m a bit of everything; vintage, tomboy, Afrocentric, eccentric, eclectic, chic. I’m not a big trend follower, I like to think I set my own. I stay true to myself but current all the same.
What is your process of deciding what to wear in the morning?
It’s weather dependent, mood dependent and occasion dependent, but most often I have an idea of what I want to wear before I go to bed. I don’t always wear that in the morning but I work around that idea.
What are the three favorite things in your closet?
I don’t discriminate (lol) but if I had to choose:
1. I have this amazing vintage dress that was my moms. It’s delicate and beautiful and my most “dress-up” dress. I love it.
2. I’ve been making some clothing pieces this summer and they’re becoming my favorites.
3. My Tees. They are my go to.
What are some of your favorite shops/websites for clothes, shoes and accessories?
I’m a compulsive shopper so this is a wrong question to ask. I shop Marshalls for everything clothing, shoes, bags etc. JCPenny, H&M, I get most of shoes from Zara, I thrift for most of my accessories or have it custom made. I just love finding little boutiques with unique items. And the fabric store for my own designs.
How long have you been natural?
For a year and some now without any relaxer.
How and why did you transition into natural hair?
I didn’t have a big ‘aha’ moment or that sort of thing. I’ve never really been attached to my hair if that makes sense. I switch it up when the feeling hits. But I guess it was sort of an unintentional journey. In 2008 while in college I took a women studies course where we discussed hair and black hair was one of the major topics. I left class feeling I needed to go natural, I have to, had to go natural! I ended up cutting my perm ends myself one evening. That didn’t last though. Within six months I had relaxer in my hair again because it was easier. It was just too hard for me and I didn’t have the resources and vast information available now. Fast forward a couple years later the feeling hit again and I wanted short hair, so I got a haircut. First to the infamous Rihanna bob hairstyle and then even shorter with tapered sides. It was during that time that for some reason I stopped using relaxers . My hair was short and I didn’t have to worry about transitioning or anytime. I just stopped relaxing my hair and let it grow out.
What is your signature hairstyle?
For the moment it would have to be the Havana/Marley twist.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
I shampoo my hair once a month, do a co-wash once a week and put the my hair in Havana or Marley twists. I keep my twist for at most two weeks and have them redone.
