Introduce yourself!
J: Hello. My name is Julianka and Iโm from Maryland. Currently, Iโm a graduate student studying food policy, applied nutrition, and public health.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
J: Deciding to go natural was the result of a relaxer gone wrong. In fact, I had no intention of ever going natural. Iโd been getting relaxers since I was about 8 or 9 years old, so I never knew what my natural hair texture looked like. I didnโt even know that I had curly hair! In 2009, I decided to give the chemicals a break and I havenโt looked back since. Iโve been natural since August 2010.
How would you describe your texture?
J: I have 3c hair thatโs very thick and frizz prone.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
J: Most of the time I do wash and goโs, which last anywhere from 5 days to a week. After I cleanse and condition, I use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie to define and reinforce my curls. Every now and then, Iโll twist my hair with Carolโs Daughter Healthy Hair Butter and seal my ends with Lavender Jamaican Black Castor Oil. Then, Iโll style it in an up-do. Iโm not a fan of twist-outs anymore because it always ends up looking thin and lifeless. Also, I love wearing my hair in a sleek, low ponytail!
What does wash day look like for you?
J: Before hopping in the shower, I apply DevaCurl No-Poo Cleanser to my dry hair. Then I hop into the shower, wet my hair thoroughly, and begin cleansing my scalp with my fingertips. If I have a lot of build up, I rinse with Braggโs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. Afterwards, I follow with a generous amount of conditioner and begin finger detangling. I switch up my conditioners every few months or so. Some of my favorites include, Yes to Carrots Pampering Conditioner, DevaCurl One Condition, and Everyday Shea Moisturizing Conditioner. I always leave a little conditioner in because I have thick, frizz prone curls. At least once a month, I deep condition and sit under my Huetiful Hair Steamer for 20 minutes. I have yet to find the perfect deep conditioner for my hair texture, so Iโm experimenting with new brands and recipes every month.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you donโt have a lot of time to style.
J: A sleek, low ponytail.
How do you combat shrinkage?
J: I use metal clips at the ends of my hair to weigh down the curls while itโs drying.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
J: Definitely at the nape of my neck. In order to prevent tangling at the nape, at night I add a few twists before bed.
What are 2 doโs for your texture?
J: Finger detangle and deep condition.
What are 2 donโts for your texture?
J: No heat and no silicones.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?

i was thinking the same thing
I see a bit of Zoe Saldana
Your hair is everything ๐
You have the perfect amount of frizz โ very minimal just gives it texture! Love your eyes, you are beautiful!
Very pretty girl
Beautiful hair! Our hair looks similar, but I am the worst with styling it (so I just rock wash-and-gos constantly). Can anyone tell what kind of hairstyle she used in the 9th picture (the one where sheโs in the denim vโneck jumpsuit)? Is that a bantu-knot out, twist-out, or what? Would love to try it. Thanks, ladies!
Same with the main photo (gray shirt, blue feathers). Can you ladies tell what style she used for her hair?
Thanks!
Hey Ashley. Thanks! I just rolled my hair with big rollers and then pin curled it at night.
Amazing! I am so excited to try this, as our hair looks so similar and I LOVE that hairstyle on you. Do you usually do this style on wet or dry hair?
I roll my hair while itโs wet, let it air dry, and then pin it while itโs dry ๐
I was mindblown at picture two. Do you cut your bangs to fall like that? And am I right to assume that is just a wash and go with the method you described?
Beautiful and i love your hair
Julianka, you are absolutely GORGEOUS and so is your hair :). Love the photos and thank you for sharing your hair journey with us.
Beautiful! Iโm in the DMV area too. Where do you get your hair shaped? Itโs gorgeous!
Hey Courtney. Thanks! I get my hair shaped once a year at Devachan Salon in Soho.
Iโm taking a trip to NY in October. Do you go to April? She has a lot of positive reviews on YT.
I donโt have a particular stylist. I just make sure I call and let them know my texture/curl pattern ahead of time. They always get it right ๐
Iโm with Courtney โ who cuts/shapes your hair? Iโm in Baltimore and would happily drive to find someone who can handle my 3c/4a hair. Gorgeous hair, gorgeous woman btw ๐
Excellent field of study! I see you love your veggies & fruits too! :)) makes a marked difference in hair health, thatโs for sureโฆ Well done!
