All you need to purchase are extra virgin coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, unrefined shea butter, and aloe vera gel to create these hair products.  Let us get started:

1. Detangler

4 tbsp coconut oil
4 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp melted shea butter (optional)

All you need for this detangler are coconut oil, olive oil, and melted shea butter.  Apply this mixture to dry or damp hair, allow it to set, and then proceed to finger detangle.  (Leaving coconut oil on dry hair overnight has been demonstrated to reduce combing damage.) (Source)

2. Pre-poo

1 part coconut oil
1 part olive oil (optional)

Apply this to dry hair and allow it to penetrate overnight the day before you shampoo. Research has shown that coconut oil can help to reduce hygral fatigue of the hair when used in this manner. (Source)

3. Deep conditioner and 4. Leave-in Conditioner

1 part coconut oil (or olive oil)
1 part aloe vera gel

Mix the aloe vera gel and coconut oil together then apply to damp (not soaking wet) hair after shampooing.  You can leave in the conditioner or rinse it out after 20 minutes, depending on which you prefer.

5. Moisturizing Spritz

1 part aloe vera gel
1 part water

Put the aloe vera gel and water into a spray bottle.  Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients thoroughly, and you’re done!  Spray the moisturizer onto dry hair when needed.  Be sure to store the bottle in the refrigerator to prolong the shelf life.

6. Whipped butter

1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp coconut oil
¼ cup aloe vera gel
½ cup shea butter

Mix the ingredients together using a hand mixer on low speed. Apply this whipped butter to freshly washed damp hair for locking in moisture or use it for twisting.

7. Oil sealant

Only ingredient:
olive oil

If you prefer sealing with oils, then go straight for it.  Apply olive oil to damp hair to seal in moisture.

8. Curly pudding

2 tbsp olive oil (or coconut oil)
3 tbsp shea butter
5 tbsp aloe vera gel

Mix the ingredients together and apply to wet hair for curl definition or to set twists for a twist out.

Which of these recipes would you try?

what if your hair hates aloe vera anything? any recommendations for substitutes?

Flax seed gel??

i think you can use honey instead it has the same properties as aloe vera

Uh, Aloe ‘hella dries out my type 4 hair. It defines fine when it’s wet, but once it dries, my hair becomes a dry and flaky mess. Thus, I have to say no to any homemade concoction with aloe. The only aloe based product I buy is my detangler–but because it’s chock full with other softeners and butters it doesn’t leave my hair dry. I only use pure Aloe or aloe gel on my skin–I mix it with a teensy bit of olive oil and it soothes any rash. I like glycerin, but in small amounts–because it can dry out… Read more »

Re: white honey/coconut milk, is this something you make yourself?

And how are you using the castor oil?

I have 2 little girls with crazy amounts of curly hair and I’m trying to use more natural products.

Thanks 🙂

What is the alternative to coconut oil, when you are allergic? I would love to try some of these, but I have weird sensitives. If know of anything equivalent, that would be helpful. Thanks, ladies!

Try olive oil.

A good alternative is babassu oil, but it can only be found online from sites like Bulk Apothecary, Camden Grey, and From Nature With Love.

You can find babassu oil on ebay too for a reasonable price.

Can you use mango butter instead of shea?

Can you use aloe Vera juice in place of gel for these recipes?

Lily ajula

Curly pudding is a must try for me.

Bebe H.

wow, these recipes are must tries for me in the near future.

I love to try new recipes, so I will try them all.

I’m definitely going to try the Coconut oil the night bf washing and sealing with olive oil. I usually seal with shea butter but it’s so heavy for the summer. It works great but man my face looks like a spotlight from all the shea butter shine my hair rubs on it :).

The Mane Captain

funny enough, i’ve tried them all!
