We are well into July, and you know what that means: beaches and pool parties galore. If you plan on just laying in the sand or lounging poolside, an out style like Naptural85’s No Fuss Quick Summer Beach Curls is perfect for letting the gentle breeze blow through your tresses. But if you want to hop in the pool or splash in the waves, you’ll need some styles to help prevent your hair from becoming a matted, tangled mess. Here are some styles that will have you focused on your fun in the sun instead of wondering how long it will take to detangle your hair later.
If it’s the day-of, or you need a quick impromptu do, these styles are easy, quick, and require only a few tools.
1. The Twist Halo Crown Updo
Check out this tutorial from Long Hair Don’t Care, LLC. To get this style going, you’ll need:
- Stretched, dry hair
- Water
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil (or any oil of your choice) for sealing
- Comb for parting
- Bobby Pins
2. Preppy Summer Updo
Brought to you by Naptural85. To achieve this look, make sure you have:
- Dry hair (not stretched)
- Comb for parting
- Scrunchie for separating hair
- Bobby Pins
3. Easy Updo/Fauxhawk
From one of my favorites, Kala of The KG Lifestyle. For this super cute style, make sure you have:
- Dry hair (not stretched, ideally an old wash n’ go style)
- Water
- Soft bristle brush for smoothing
- EcoStyler Gel (optional)
- Scrunchies
- Clips for separating hair
- Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie (or moisturizing hold product of your choice)
- Bobby Pins
4. High Bun
Ms. Danti shows us how it’s done! Get your top knot together with:
- Dry hair (stretched or textured, in this video she uses an old twist-out)
- Water
- Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie (or moisturizing hold product of your choice)
- EcoStyler Gel (optional)
- Denman or soft bristle brush for smoothing
- Scrunchie
- Elastic headband (I prefer a double-looped Goody Elastic No-Slip Headbands)
- Toothbrush for that baby hair (lol…totally optional)
- Bobby Pins
5. Chunky Flat Twist Updo
NaturalMetra schools us flat twisting novices in how to create a super cute, protective and pool-ready style in under 15 minutes, using only:
- Dry stretched hair (in this video, she uses an old twist-out)
- Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner (or your leave-in of choice)
- Rat tail comb for parting
- Clips for holding hair
- Scrunchie
- Bobby Pins
If you’re a little more skilled (unlike me) and have a a lot more time, stunt at the pool with these cute styles:
6. Two Strand Flat Twist Pomp Updo
Toni from MyNaturalSistas is giving life with her red tresses and super cute twisted pomp updo. Get this look by the water with:
- Dry stretched hair
- Comb for parting
- Clips for separating hair
- Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercreme (or an affordable alternative moisturizing and styling product)
- Carol’s Daughter Macadamia Hold & Control Smoother (or a cheaper alternative edge control product)
- I.C. Fantasia Gel
- Bobby Pins
7. Two Strand Twists
By no means am I going to advocate mini-twists, those take entirely too long and the takedown is an absolute pain. Check out iknowlee’s perfect semi-mini twists. Get her look by using:
- Dry hair (freshly washed and air-dried)
- Clips for separating and holding down twists
- Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner
- MyHoneyChild Type 4 Hair Creme
What summer styles will you be trying out this month?
Side note: A few of these tutorials use EcoStyler Gel, which can leave some of us with crispy crunchy hair. For a good list of alternatives to EcoStyler and other holding gels, click here!

these are all great!!! thanks!
#7 the 2strand twist…my fav! type 4 whoop, whoop!
I love the two strand twists too. I have them in right now though mine are shorter than hrs they still look great. The best part is I can leave then in for 2 weeks while all I have to do is spritz with a water/oil mix at night or in the morning. Then after the 2 weeks is up, I rock the best twist out ever for a week. Then wash/deep condition and start all over. I have retained the most hair this way.
Pretty styles…
What about people with short hair?? like one- 1.5 yr natural or so?
hmmm…
Also as a very kinky 4c, these styles wouldn’t work out for me. My hair doesn’t lay flat or sleek.
I disagree. I could do these styles on my 4c hair with slight modification of course. For instance Naptiral 85 style for me would have to be done on a stretched old twist out. Dont worry about it being smooth n sleek. It will look puffier for us but cute none the less. As for short hair get some bobbin pins and start experimenting. I had a lot of fun with my hair when it was shorter by using bobbin pins to create faux buns and up dos.
I’m a 1.5 year also and if you can get your hair into a ponytail (or 2), you can create some of these styles using Marley hair. It costs about $5 at your local hair store. Search youtube for Marley hair styles.
love all of these. To me, these are protective styles since they tuck the ends in. The other article claiming protective styling has more low manipulation styles. People always get them mixed up.
Ooh I really like the chunky flat twist updo! She makes twisting the back of her head look really easy though, but that is not my forte! I’m going to practice, though, because I’m really trying to grow out my hair and I think I’m being foiled by not liking my protective styles.
I live in the UK and a lot of the products i see on this site are not readily available and if i buy them online it seems like it is either really expensive or doesn’t seem like it’s worth the wait. Is there any products that any of your UK bloggers can recommend or websites that offer products at a reasonable price for those over the pond?

fusionofcultures on youtube is from the UK.
you can try the http://www.curlyemporium.co.uk they pretty much have most of the natural hair product line.
@Trephena try Beunique, they’re UK based and her products are nice and natural! 🙂 http://www.beuniquehaircare.co.uk/
I hope you ladies plan on showing off your awesome protective styles at the AFROPUNK Festival this year. 60,000 people attended last year, and never in my life had I seen so many beautiful naturals strut the fest like a runway. Don’t miss out! They’ll be food, performances (Questlove rings bell), style mavericks like yourselves, skaters, and all of this awesomeness is FREE.

ooooh, I’m thinking about going to this. I’m getting soooo excited. Are you going?
Here’s a style I did a tutorial on that really works for me ‑especially during the summer.
Nice do! Will have to copy this soon. Very creative and elegant looking.
love the halo twists! Can’t wait to try it!

Lord knows I can’t flat twist to save my life!! Arrggh! Working on it—I LOVE the flat twist updo, it’s gorgeous!
:-/ All of these ladies look ABSOLUTELY beautiful with these styles.. Sadly.. It just solidified my decision to relax my hair again. Ever since I’ve taken down my Marley braids, I’ve struggled with horrible shrinkage. I’ve tried style after style only to have it shrink up and look stupid. I’ve been fed up and frustrated for a while. I have no curl definition. My hair just frizzes and fuzzes. I hate it. I hate my hair. It’s bringing low self-esteem. So all I can do is relax. None of the tips have worked. No styles. ’ Sorry to be so negative… Read more »
If your hair is giving you this much grief, then you should relax it. I’m not saying that to be funny or sarcastic- I’m saying that in the grand scheme of things, hair really isn’t that important. Maybe once your hair is relaxed, you will address the low self-esteem issues that you *think* are being caused by your hair (because self-esteem has nothing to do with appearance, but, rather, how you feel about your own self-worth.)
Would loose twist do good for in pool? I want an easy style that doesn’t require elatics and hair pins. I just not certain about ability to get soaking wet and stay intact. I love the fullness and heard they are easy to do. I want do a no fuss hairstyle which still show my hair length to the fullest.
