Introduce yourself!
C: My name is Chisom. I’m Nigerian, 19, and reside in Houston, Texas.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
C: The real reason I went natural was because I truly just wanted some naturally, curly hair. Also, I wanted a different look. I was 15 when I did the big chop and everybody around me had the same relaxed look. It helped me to truly be comfortable with myself, inside and out, at a young age. I will be 4 years natural on August 7th, 2013.
How would you describe your texture?
C: My lovely mane falls under the type 4 category. I have really thick and coarse hair that has a mind of its own.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
C: Since this is my first year of college, my hair routine has changed. I shampoo and condition my hair once a month, co-wash twice a month, and moisturize almost every day. My staples are Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner (blue bottle), Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Jamaican Locking Gel, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioning Cream, and most importantly water!
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
C: Like I said, I’m in college and I’m always busy, so my go-to hairstyle is a high puff right on top of my head. The only time I leave my hair out is when I’m feeling pretty groovy lol.
How do you combat shrinkage?
C: To combat shrinkage I just moisturize and twist my hair into chunky twists all over my head to keep it stretched, or occasionally I might do a cool blowout.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
C: The biggest problem I have with my hair is single-strand knots and the ends of my hair. They always grind my gears!
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
C: The 2 do’s for my hair are water and shea butter.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
C: The 2 don’ts for my hair are sleeping without a silk scarf and product build-up.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
C: You can find me on my Tumblr: chizohfro.tumblr.com and on Instagram: @chizohfro.
Beautiful girl! Your face, hair and style are lovely, and it’s great that you were comfortable enough in your own skin to big chop at the tender age of 15, a challenge to be told! Keep going, girl, you’re doing well and inspiring others!
