N: My name is Neoshi, but most people call me Neo. I was born and raised in South Florida and that’s where I live today.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
N: I didn’t loc my hair until 2009, but I had been wearing it natural since 2005. I got tired of perming it and I just felt like I was doing my hair (and myself) a disservice. I really wanted to embrace my natural beauty and work on loving myself just the way I was. I think it was more of a spiritual journey for me more than anything.
How would you describe your texture?
N: I’m not too hip to the whole hair texture type thing, but my hair is very soft and also very thin (IMO) and I would love to have more volume…thicker strands of hair I guess.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
N: I don’t do much with my hair in terms of styling. I pretty much wear it in one or two styles most of the time. I either wear it down or wear what I call “a crinkled twist‐out.” Every now and then I visit my Loctician and she’ll hook me up with something new and different. She’s the bomb (thanks Ichechi).
What does wash day look like for you?
N: Wash day is very relaxing to me. I love it. I usually retwist my hair once every 4 weeks. I used to do it every three weeks, but that stopped after I noticed thinning. I wash twice with a clarifying shampoo and then a conditioner. After a quick towel dry I rub my hair and scalp with Shea Butter. Then it’s time to retwist. I block out a few hours to retwist (about 2–3 hours) and pull up a movie while I’m at it. I use ORS Lock and Twist Gel at the roots and spray frequently with an equal mixture of extra virgin olive oil and water to keep it wet. Once I’m done I let my hair air dry, then [poof] I feel like a brand new woman.
Describe your favorite go‐to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
N: Pretty simple, again I just wear it down.
How do you combat shrinkage?
N: I find that keeping my hair moisturized works well for my hair, but for the most part I don’t have a problem with shrinkage.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
N: OMG! The back of my hair is very thin and more prone to breakage than the other areas. I actually lost a couple of locs because of it. When I retwist I can’t palm roll the last three rows. I have to interlock them to prevent thinning.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
N: Lots of water daily and covering it when I sleep.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
N: Retwisting too soon and Beeswax (attracts dust and buildup).
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
