*Prepared for BGLH by Meosha Tall of 1MeNaturally
M: My name is Myriam (but almost everyone calls me Mymou). I am from Cameroon, but I have been living in France for ten years.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
M: I went natural because of envy. I never had problems with my relaxed hair, but I hated relaxers even though I was only getting 2 per year. One day while on the internet I found a blog showcasing naturalista beauties and I was like…How do they do that? How do they manage their natural texture?…I want that too. And there it was. I transitioned for about 7 months and cut it all off. I have been natural for 5 years now.
How would you describe your texture?
M: My hair texture.…that’s a question I don’t really know the answer to. In the middle it seems to be 3C, in the back of my head 4A, but on my temples I have a 4B texture. My hair is really dense, but not coarse at all. Well actually only when it is well moisturized.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
M: During a month I rock either twists or buns. Those are my favorite styles cause I am lazy as…whatever. I will twist my hair on Sunday, rock my twists for the entire week, untwist it on Friday and rock my twist out for the weekend, then it’s wash day. I bun my hair especially to protect my ends. It is easy and simple to do, and I think it is very classy. I love high buns. If it wasn’t for my YouTube channel, I swear I would not be doing any other hairstyle on my hair.
What does wash day look like for you?
M: I wash my hair once a week. I am currently using a brand named Farida B. The night before wash day I use her preShampoo Mask on my hair. Put a shower cap on it and go to bed. The next morning I wash with the HydraRforce Shampoo, then apply the other mask of the same brand. Rinse it out and dry my hair with a towel. I then use a conditioner that I pick up randomly between my favs: Oyin Handmade Hair Dew, or Curl and Style Milk from Shea Moisture, to moisturize my hair. Then I twist it up and I am done for the week. Two or three days after the shampoo if I feel like my hair is dry I will spray a little water on it, reapply my conditioner, and seal with olive oil or shea butter. I do this only during winter when it is cold because during the summer I cowash almost everyday. At the end of the week I will undo my twists and rock my twist out for the weekend.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
M: A big fluffy fro…When I don’t have time I don’t want to do anything with my hair so I’ll either let my Afro out or bun it. Depends on if I don’t mind having my hair in my face that day.
How do you combat shrinkage?
M: The banding method is my best friend. I band my hair while loose, I band it while in twists…I band it whenever I want my hair stretched.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
M: My temples are my main problem area. They are sensitive if braided too tight, or if I do a puff or a bun too tight. I get pimples or my hair will break off. Also the back of my hair is really coily. I have to detangle it often if I don’t want it to become dreads.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
M: Use and abuse of conditioner and masks. Always seal in the moisture.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
M: Never brush it or comb it dry. I don’t do braid outs…My hair looks frizzy at the moment that I take the braids out.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
M: Yes I have a YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/mymou, A blog: http://living-my-blessedlife.blogspot.com and even a Facebook page: Mymou’s youtube channel.
