C: My name is Christina Marie Kellogg. I’m from Chicago.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
C: I’ve been natural about 3 years now. I stopped relaxing my hair in October 2009 and big chopped in June of 2010. I went natural because I wanted to see myself, as I was. Plus, I’d met my relaxed hair goals of growing my hair down to my armpits. After which I grew tired of roller setting it every weekend, for that “voluminous blow out” look. I wanted to see my real curls, spend a lot less time doing my hair, and just feel more comfortable with myself.
How would you describe your texture?
C: My hair is very dense with fine strands and very tightly coiled curls. They look like little corkscrews after I shampoo my hair. I’m not really sure which letter type my texture is. Maybe 4a…4b? Which do you think my hair is?
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
C: My styling regimen is rather straightforward, as I currently have my hair cut in a Mohawk style. I love my cut (and having short hair in general) because it seems the older I get, the less I feel like actually styling my hair. I wash my hair 1–2 times a week. Deep condition, whenever I feel up for a “spa-like” treatment, which is maybe once or twice a month. For the most part, I wear the “wash & go” style. When I want something different, I grab my flat iron and straighten my hair. I also enjoy “out styles” (twist, braid, bantu, etc.), from time to time. As far as products, I switch back and forth between the following: Head and Shoulders 2‑in‑1 Itchy Scalp Care, Giovanni Direct Leave-In, and Smooth as Silk Conditioners. Jane Carter Shampoo, Conditioners, Condition & Sculpt and Nourish & Shine.
Please detail how you, your stylist or barber maintains your cut and how often you shape/trim your hair.
C: My husband (who is SO not a barber, or a stylist for that matter. Ha!) cuts my hair. I get my sides shaved and tapered about every two weeks.
What does wash day look like for you?
C: A typical wash day goes real quick! I shampoo with Head and Shoulders 2‑in‑1, or Jane Carter Shampoo (whichever is in front of cabinet at the time), rinse, and towel dry.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
C: Hmmm…I don’t really have any problem areas. Except my scalp gets dry and itchy in the winter. For that, I use Head and Shoulders 2‑in‑1 Itchy Scalp Care. My temples used to bother me because they are sparser; and now, I have a gang of grays popping up there and around my forehead. But I just let them be. They add character!
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
C: Detangling with conditioner. And, cutting it! So you don’t have to spend so much time detangling with conditioner. Shorter hair is so much less work.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
C: Combing it dry. And, going anywhere past 10 days not combing it at all. I’ve been there, and it’s pretty dangerous!
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
C: Yes, MerelyMarie.com.
