*Prepared for BGLH by Meosha Tall of 1MeNaturally
D: My name is Danielle and I’m originally from New Jersey, but currently reside in Douglasville, GA.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
D: I woke up one morning and decided that I no longer wanted to relax my hair. Maybe I had an epiphany in my sleep! I enjoyed having short hair, but I felt that the maintenance required too much of my time. So I gave the perm up cold turkey and let my hair begin her journey. I transitioned for about 8 months and decided to chop November 2010.
How would you describe your texture?
D: My texture is a mix of 3C/4A/4B and is extremely dense with normal porosity.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
D: I try to keep my styling regimen as simple as possible. I am a fan of twist outs and I’ve recently fell in love with bantu knot outs. Bantu knot outs produce such bouncy hair. For my twist outs, I use Oyin Handmade Juices and Berries leave in, Hair Dew and seal with their Sugar Berries Pomade. I retwist every 2–3 days and sleep with a satin bonnet. I am also a huge fan of Uncle Funky’s Daughter Defunk, a hair refresher tonic that soothes itchy scalp and refreshes the hair. If I want big hair, I sleep in two high ponytails and fluff in the morning.
What does wash day look like for you?
D: Wash days for me are getting easier. I realized that washing in small sections produces less shower time and less tangles. I finger detangle with olive oil, twist in small sections and secure the ends with hair pins. I wash with Kinky Curly Come Clean focusing on my scalp and letting the shampoo run down. I use a hair pin to pin the hair up when I’ve completed each section. After washing, I use Kinky Curly Knot Today and My Honey Child Twist Out Creme to twist my sections, let my hair air dry and untwist the next day with a little oil.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
D: My go to hairstyle is a high puff or my famous two ponytails, lol. I use a little oil and ouchless bands and I’m out!!
How do you combat shrinkage?
D: I combat shrinkage by using twist outs or bantu knot outs. I know my hair will fall in a couple of days after a wash and I’m cool with it.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
D: My problem area is my nape. It requires gentle handling and less manipulation.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
D: Two do’s for my texture…moisturize my strands and finger detangle before washing!!
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
D: Two don’ts for my texture…don’t sleep without a bonnet or satin pillowcase. It would be a tangled mess, and also I don’t do well with wash and go’s. Wash and go’s produce a lot of single strand knots and tangles. I love them from afar!!
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
D: You can find me on Instagram @danifree77.
