Introduce yourself!
M: My name is Mia and I’m from England.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
M: I’ve been natural all my life! My hair is really thin so I never wanted to take the risks with chemicals. Even though my hair drives me crazy sometimes I love my curls. My hair is what I’m known for amongst my peers now.
How would you describe your texture?
M: Probably 3b/c. My strands are thin and on a good day lots of small corkscrew, but also ‘S’ shaped curls.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
M: Well my hair is nicest after I have washed it. Sometimes after washing (when I have time and this can take ages) I will plait my hair into small plaits, normally they aren’t neat so I won’t go out in them but leaving for a few days is better. When I take them out my hair is longer and I have different curls. I have tried the same with twists, but it didn’t work out as well. If it is a day or two after washing I will moisturize with products such as, Taliah Waajid, The Great Detangler; Crème of Nature, Daily Breakage Relief or Hawaiian Silky Herbal Oil Moisturizer just so it stops getting dry, however I haven’t found the perfect product yet.
What does wash day look like for you?
M: I have been through countless amounts of products, but at the moment once a week I’ll wash my hair with Taliah Waajid shampoo. After I use Mixed Chicks conditioner and whilst I have that in I section my hair into 4 and brush or comb (depends what type of curls I want) through. I leave it in for another 2–3 minutes then wash out with cold water using my fingers to comb through again. I leave my hair damp before putting on Taliah Waajid Curly Curl Crème all over my hair, using a scrunching technique so not to disrupt the curls. These curls will last for about 3 days at most then I will wear my hair up for another 2–3 days then wash my hair and start the process again!
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
M: Recently I have preferred my hair up. Being at school it’s a lot easier! I normally will have a high ponytail or high bun. However wearing my hair up will disrupt and stretch the curls so I wont have a nice shape till I wash it again. When I go out I like to pin one side as well as I’m not brave enough to get an undercut it makes a similar style!
How do you combat shrinkage?
M: I’ve never been able to combat shrinkage! My hair hardly grows and if my hair wasn’t curly it would be shoulder length. I guess combing it out helps.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
M: Dry and frizzy hair. Not being able to find a hairdresser who understands my hair!
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
M: Sleep with cap on and make sure I moisturize straight after washing.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
M: Blow dry and brush when dry unless you want a big frizzy afro!
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
M: Yeah I’m on Instagram @miaharvey1 and Twitter @MiaHarvey1.
Love her hair. The coloring on the ends is beautiful.
Love, Peace and Chocolate,
Tiffany
so cute as a toddler!
Aww that baby pic is too adorbs.
love your hair! cute pics!
My strands are pretty thin like this too. I think it makes it more manageable (except for knots), but also I get jealous of some of the volume I see in other women’s hair. Mia is uber cute and this just reminds me to love MY hair!
She’s pretty.
pretty face, pretty hair, but i bet u would be even prettier with a big frizzy afro
I was thinking the same thing. Lovely photos though.
My hair doesn’t do too well with oils, but coconut oil works for me. I rtnecely started putting it in my hair after every wash. I notice a difference. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. Maybe I should do a post about coconut oil.
What does that even mean? She *has* a big fro.
People these days really need to watch what they say bc they come off so ignorant sometimes. I mean had I said that Mia would look better with straight hair people on this site would probably track me down and try and shoot me. I’ve been natural for a few years, but now I understand what some people with relaxed hair mean when they say that some naturals are getting on their nerves with their “holier-than-thou” attitude.
Wow that is one curly fry! Wish I could touch those luscious locks!!
She is lovely, and her hair reminds me of mine. My strands are thin too. Boooo to that 🙂
You have a beautiful smile. Adorable 🙂
Mia’s hair is so pretty. Gives me hope that my thin strands will be cuter once I have some length! That baby picture s absolutely adorable also.
Lovely girl, and totally relatable. Natural all your life? Good for you!
Love it!
Thank you so much for your kind comments!
Wow. Finally I found a hair twin!! It’s so hard to find someone with my hair. I mean its 3C, low density (thin), very soft, the strands are fine, and doesn’t need any particular reason to get frizzy! I love the soft look of twist outs, but my hair tends to get puffy within a couple of hours and looks less define and doesn’t look like a twist out anymore. Have you found a twist out method that works for you? Please help.
Yes definitely sounds like my hair! I dont normally twist out that often I just put in LOADS of leave-in conditioner and my curls define on their own. But if that doesn’t work, I’ve found if I cornrowing my hair (just two braids) after washing then leave in for day or so I get a nicer curl! However this is time consuming! Hope that helps 🙂
Wow!! I swear I do the same thing. I use an obscene amount of leave in but I use gel afterwards to keep my my curls from becoming frizzy as it dries. Then I do my cornrows after its dry (about 2 hours.…one of the perks of thin hair) and then I stretch it with my cornrows. Well, I guess I should give up on the twist outs!! So bye, from Miami, Florida. Thanks for responding 🙂
