*Prepared for BGLH by Meosha Tall of 1MeNaturally
K: My name is Kanisha and I was born and bred in the “Big D” Dallas, Texas. Been here all my life!
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
K: Funny story…My 11 year old daughter (now 14 yrs.) had been saying she wanted to stop getting relaxers for years (she hated chemical burns), but I just could not imagine MY head without one. At the time we were relaxing every 4 weeks, so my compromise was to stretch our relaxers out 6 weeks. 6 weeks became 8 weeks…8 weeks became 12 weeks, until I was convinced there was absolutely NO reason for us to relax EVER AGAIN!! I fell in love with my natural hair and big chopped after 6 months. I had my last relaxer June 2009 and big chopped 6 months later on December 18, 2009. December 2012 marks my 3 year nappiversary!!! Yay me!
How would you describe your texture?
K: I would describe my texture as mostly 3c (front, crown and nape) and 4a/4b behind each ear. My mane has a consistent curl throughout, but slightly wavy in the crown. I’d say my strands are fine, with little frizz or tangling if left alone, and extremely thick (even when I was relaxed).
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
K: My regimen is pretty simple. I rock wash and go’s or high buns 80 % of the time in the warm months (which are March – early November in Dallas) and in the cooler months I’ll rock mini twists, twist outs, up-do’s and flat iron / straight styles. With every single look I use THE SAME products…the products below work great for me, so I stick with them.
I co‐wash with Suave Humectant rinse‐out Conditioner each day. While soaking wet, I add Giovanni Direct or Blue Magic Mango Lime Leave‐in Conditioner and allow it to air dry. Throw a head band on with a lil’ Eco Styler Gel around the edges and that’s my wash and go. For a simple work look I’ll pull it up into a high bun, for a funky / edgy look maybe twist it up and allow to dry, for a twist out, or for a super fancy look, I’ll blow dry and flat iron for straight styles (using Smooth and Shine heat protectants, as well).
What does wash day look like for you?
K: I have a no hassle approach by shampooing / deep conditioning as needed, which is usually once every month or so. While my hair is soaking wet, parted in four sections, I apply Cream of Nature Argan Oil sulfate‐free Shampoo section by section, finger detangling as I go. After rinsing, I apply Organic Roots Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Pak Deep Conditioner, thoroughly detangle with a paddle brush, leave in under a plastic cap for an hour or so, rinse and style as usual.
Describe your favorite go‐to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
K: My go‐to style is hands down a high bun. It’s cute, classy, and simple at the same time.
How do you combat shrinkage?
K: I’ve learned to embrace shrinkage…natural hair is so versatile. If I want to show length, there are always twist‐outs, blow‐outs, or flat iron / straight looks…take your pick.
Tell us about your hair color?
K: To achieve my desired shade of red, I first lifted my dark hair using Dark and Lovely’s Luminous Blonde, then mixed 3 semi‐permanent hues (VIA Copper Penny, Bright Red, and Dark Cherry) which gave me, what I’d describe as an autumn red. I absolutely love it and will go a little brighter in Spring / Summer.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
K: My hair texture behind my ears on each side is all kinds of unruly…it sucks up moisture, shrinks, frizzes so bad and the curl pattern is very tight, so I have to do a bit more to make sure I give that area a bit more TLC.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
K: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!!! Handle with care and detangle from tip to root!
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
K: Comb or brush dry hair. Attempt a twist out without allowing hair to dry 100%.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
