S: My name is Serenity, and I am from the DMV area also known as DC, Maryland and Virginia. I was born in Alexandria, Virginia and live in Woodbridge.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
S: I have been natural for 3 years now. I went natural because I was tired of being burned by relaxers. I am a licensed hair stylist and I know how damaging relaxers can be. I was also looking for more versatility.
How would you describe your texture?
S: My hair is a mixture of straight/wavy, spiraled and kinky. If I had to choose a particular category I would say 4a, fine, and very thick. My hair listens very well. When I twist it, it listens…When I straighten it (which is only twice a year) it straightens with no problem and stays straight until it gets wet.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
S: My styling regimen is very basic. I swear by twist outs!!! We all have lazy days and my hair does not really care for wash and goes, but I will do a wash and go puff. My staples are Carol’s Daughter Healthy Hair Butter, Mimosa Hair Honey, and the Black Vanilla Leave-in Conditioner.
What does wash day look like for you?
S: On wash days my routine is to wash and steam with my Huetiful Hair Steamer and then twist right after. The shampoo I use is either Mixed Chicks Shampoo and Conditioner or the Carol’s Daughter Monoi Shampoo and Conditioner. I have used Mixed Chicks since I went natural and I swear by their conditioner. It so far is the conditioner that my hair likes the best. I just decided to try the Monoi line by Carol’s Daughter and so far so good, however I feel as if the conditioner is not enough for me.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
S: My favorite go to style when I don’t have enough time to style is an old twist out, pony puff with flat twists in the front.
How do you combat shrinkage?
S: Shrinkage. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don’t. It depends on what look I’m going for. Sometimes I like my twist outs to be tight and sometimes I want them to be stretched. Twists are my main go to to prevent my hair from looking like it’s only 3 inches long.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
S: The middle of my head is like a completely different continent!!!! It has no curl and it’s super kinky and dry. I do everything to that part of my hair slower and in smaller sections.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
S: 2 do’s for my texture are moisturizing and twisting.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
S: 2 don’ts for my texture are 2nd day wash and goes and repeat nighttime pineapples. Lol My best bet is to pineapple the first night and then twist every night after that.
