K: Hi! My name is Kia and I am from Virginia Beach, Virginia. However, I currently live in Richmond, Virginia as a college student studying fashion merchandising.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
K: I went natural by transitioning to natural for five months after watching a video on YouTube and falling in love with the YouTuber’s natural hair. I finally just decided to big chop January 18, 2011. I have been completely natural and relaxer free for one year and 8 months.
How would you describe your texture?
K: I have never really delved into what exactly my hair type is as I find it to be of very little importance to me, but if I had to make a guess I would say that it is predominantly somewhere between a 4a and 4b. My hair is extremely dense however my strands differ in different sections of my hair. For instance, in the majority of the back and middle of my head my hair is very coarse with extremely tight curls while on the outskirts of my head my hair is much less coarse with looser curls.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
K: Over the course of the month I usually just stick to a basic chunky twist out. It is the easiest style for me to do as well as my favorite. I am a college student, I work, and I also have an active social life so a chunky twist out is easy and quick for me to do at night. I can also do almost any style I want to do starting with a basic twist out, if I have extra time and find myself in the mood to do so.
What does wash day look like for you?
K: A typical washday for me starts early in the morning and never at night because my hair takes forever to dry. I wash my hair while in twists and in sections. As my hair has grown I have found that this is the easiest and quickest way to go about washing my hair. I begin by shampooing my hair in four sections. I have yet to find a shampoo that I am in love with, however currently I have been using Mixed Silk by Silk Elements Gentle Cleansing Shampoo pretty consistently.
After washing that out I condition my hair in the same sections with Trader Joe’s Balanced Moisturizing Conditioner, which is a product that I am in love with. I will most likely be using it for the rest of my life. After washing the conditioner out I apply leave in conditioner (Carol’s Daughter Tui Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner and/or Kinky-Curly Knot Today Natural Leave-In/Detangler), oil (Soft Sheen Carson Optimum Oil Therapy), and hair moisturizing lotion (Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Moisturizing Lotion). I apply these in sections and one twist at a time while finger detangling at the same time (I no longer use combs or brushes). I have found that by washing my hair in twists my hair gets much less tangled in the wash process. After doing all this I’m done, but my hair will most likely not be dry until the next morning so a cute scarf is always a must for washday.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
K: I really don’t do a lot of hairstyles so my favorite go-to hairstyle is a chunky twist out, and like I stated before it is really quick for me to do. However, on the rare nights I fall asleep without twisting my hair the next day you can usually find me rocking a very high puff, which takes almost no time to execute.
How do you combat shrinkage?
K: I pretty much can tell by the weather that day if I am going to get a lot of shrinkage. For instance my hair hates really hot weather, rain and humidity. So I usually just will not wear my hair out those days. I will instead wear a cute scarf style, high puff, or some kind of updo.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
K: I would say that my major problem areas are the ends of my hair, which can get extremely tangled and stringy if not trimmed regularly. My scalp can also get very dry so I do my best to moisturize my hair whenever I find it necessary and to condition often as well.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
K: Two do’s for my hair are moisturizing nightly and twisting and prepping my hair every night. These two things make my life so much easier.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
K: Two don’ts for my hair are going to bed without twisting my hair or at least putting it in a high puff or pineapple. This leads to extremely dry and tangled hair as well as a bad hair day. Another don’t would have to be over moisturizing. I say this because there have been times I put too much oil or moisturizing lotion in my hair and this not only makes my hair look greasy but weighs it down as well and causes it to loose all of its bounce.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
K: I have a fashion blog. I don’t update it regularly unfortunately, but I am trying my best to devote more time to it. So you can find me there at imitatingkia.blogspot.com. Or you can also follow me on Twitter, twitter.com/imitatingkia, and last but not least Instagram, @imitatingkia.
