Introduce yourself!
M: Hey, lovelies! My name is Morgan and I’m from Iowa. Yes, Black people live in Iowa. I’m currently a student studying Business and Spanish.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
M: At first I went natural because I didn’t feel I needed a relaxer; I could straighten my hair without one. During my transition I didn’t know how to care for my curls and straightened often. Honestly, I never thought about wearing my hair curly. As I started to watch YouTube videos and research blogs, I had a change of perspective. I wear my hair natural because I don’t need chemicals to alter my hair to fit a standard that I don’t belong to. I just reached a year this July. I big chopped at 11 months post relaxer.
How would you describe your texture?
M: I have a few different textures. I am 3c in the front, 4a in the back, and 4b in the crown area. I have fine strands, but my hair is very thick/dense.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
M: My hair is frizzy after drying so I normally opt for stretched styles. I add Shea Moisture Restorative Conditioner to dry hair and seal with olive oil, finger comb, and then I braid my hair into 6–8 straight back braids. This method gives me the most length. It also helps my hair hold up against the humidity of the summertime.
What does wash day look like for you?
M: I wash my hair every 2–3 weeks with Terressentials Mud Hair Wash. I add the hair wash to a spray bottle, add water and shake. Then I section my hair, spray it on each section and finger comb and two-strand twist each section. I wash it out in the shower and add a styling cream and seal. I lastly flat twist and head to bed!
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
M: When I don’t have a lot of time to style, a high bun it is! A high bun is the most basic hairstyle you can wear with anything. You can dress it up or dress it down!
How do you combat shrinkage?
M: I can never get rid of shrinkage completely, but to minimize it I wear my hair in twist outs/braid outs. They give me the most length. I’ve quit being length obsessed and I came to terms with the fact that my hair will not look as long as it actually is.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
M: My crown is the most shrunken and dry area of my head. I have to moisturize more frequently. It just requires a little more love!
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
M: Moisturizing and sealing are the best things for hair. My hair does not act right if it is not moisturized properly. It is more versatile when it is healthy.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
M: Protein treatments and excessively not wearing my hair in a protective style. If I want to retain length, I have to protect my ends.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
M: Yes! Sophistakinky.blogspot.com
her hair is VERY pretty.

OMG Morgan you and your hair are soooo beautiful! I have not seen you since you were in elementary school, your mom posted this article and I didnt even recognize you. welcome to the natural club! I’ve been natural since 2007 and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I’m actually just now to the point where I’m getting a consistent regimen because until recently I’ve only done the basics to maintain my hair, but even with minimum work my hair is healthier and longer than it’s ever been. When do you get back to Iowa, I’d love to swap… Read more »
