J: Joiya aka Jo Clo aka xojoclo on Instagram. 🙂 I’m from Northern California originally and then moved to Arizona. I currently live in Washington, DC.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
J: I have been natural since 2000, however my current hair is reflective of a big chop in 2010 (1 year and 10 months). My original reasoning for going natural was due to my disgust for unhealthy hair due to over processing (i.e. breaking off from flat ironing, perms, braids, etc.) and attempting to maintain styles that were not natural to me as a black woman. That reasoning shifted to include merely wanting to help adjust misinformed black people’s perception of beauty beyond that of the learned European standard, and forcing people to accept what naturally grows out of my head.
After having been vegan for a year and a half and starting a Facebook page and movement called Health Over Hair (HOH) www.facebook/healthoverhair, being natural was important for reasons that included helping others to see that healthy hair or long hair if that was your goal, is contingent upon your overall health (i.e. mental health, what you eat, exercise, etc.). Now it is really about understanding yourself beyond your hair and self-love. I hope that wasn’t a novel…lol
How would you describe your texture?
J: I don’t really define my hair with any standardized system or know what the standards are. I like my hair to set its own standard. Besides, it really does vary depending on the conditioner I use to wash it with, the weather, how many days have gone by before washing it, the amount of product layered in, over what amount of days, etc. But generally speaking my hair has looser curls in the front, kinkier curls on the side, cotton textures in the middle and tighter, smaller curls in the back. =)
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
J: I’m a bona fide wash n go girl because it’s the easiest and least time consuming without torturing my hair through some process (my hair is sensitive and impressionable to most processing). I co-wash with Mizani Conditioner, Tresemme Sulfate Free Conditioner or Herbal Essences Hello Hydration and then use Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-in Conditioner. For any cleanup styles or edge cleanups I use an online product called Coconut Curl Pudding by Komaza Care (love them!).
What does wash day look like for you?
J: I mainly co-wash and that’s for my everyday wash n go. On days when I want to cleanse my hair of product build up I alternate shampoos (still a product junkie in the shampoo realm). I am currently using Aussie Moist Shampoo. I use a detangling brush and brush the ends up to the root. Then reapply conditioner and leave it in during the day.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style?
J: The wash n go or the ninja bun on wet to damp hair. I bend over and let my hair fall forward and double tie a bun on the very top!
How do you combat shrinkage?
J: I don’t. I have zero obsession with length. I only care if my hair is healthy.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
J: I try to pay attention to my edges only because they suffer the most abuse.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
J: Water (get a filter for your shower head!).
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
J: Coconut oil — My hair hates it for some reason…lol
