Introduce yourself!
N:
Hi my name is Nia B and I’m from Chicago. I’m a PMP certified Project Manager and love being a wife, mother and blogger. Hair has been my passion as long as can remember. At the tender age of 8, I gave my Barbie a Jheri curl using all my mother’s cleaning supplies mixed in a bowl for my curl solution and rolled the doll’s hair with all my barrettes (poor doll!).

How long have you been natural?
N:
I’ve been natural for a little over 12 years with 8 of them being in locs.

How and why did you transition into natural hair?
N:
I decided to go natural because my hair was starting to thin in the crown. I was at work one day and one of my co-workers said I was going bald in the top of my head. Needless to say…that was it for me! I was done relaxing my hair from that day forward and over time proved the constant relaxing and blow drying for me, was the source of my hair thinning.

I transitioned for about 5 months and decided I didn’t want the process to be a long and drawn out one, so on a whim I got my shears and off went all my relaxed hair. Back in 2000 when I BCed I had no clue what to do with my hair, so a big tub of “blue gel” was my best friend and I wore a TWA for about 4 months and then decided to loc my hair.

After a little over 8 years of wearing locs, I felt I understood my hair enough that I could take care of it whether it was in locs or loose, so I talked it over with my hubby, said a prayer, and decided to cut my locs. I have enjoyed every part of my hair journey since.

What are your must-have products for shampooing, conditioning and styling your hair?
N:
I use either organic extra virgin coconut oil or Karen’s Body Beautiful Secret Weapon Restorative Hair Treat to pre-poo my hair with. For me pre-pooing is a must to soften and detangle my hair because it loves to tangle. Depending on how my hair feels, I’ll co-wash with Suave’s Coconut Conditioner or use a shampoo bar to cleanse my hair. I really like how my hair responds to KBB’s Juicy Bar. I LOVE conditioners and have at least 10 of them I rotate between. A few are Bee Mine Deep Conditioner, Hairveda Sitrinillah Deep Hair Masque and KBB’s Luscious Locks. Whichever conditioner I do use, it’s a must that I add olive oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil and castor oil to my conditioner; I love the results afterwards. I try to steam each time I condition my hair as well.

After I clean and condition my hair, I add a little bit of argan oil, then Bee Mine Hair Milk and either KBB Butter Love or Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Pomade to seal in the moisture. During the week, I use KBB’s Sweet Ambrosia sealed with either Butter Love, KBB’s Super Duper Hydrating Cream or Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Pomade (using one or the other depends on me and how my hair feels).

What is your signature hairstyle?
N:
My signature style is a half braid, half twist-out. During the week, my hair is in a bun, but I wouldn’t call that my signature style. I love wearing my hair out and reserve that look for special occasions or on the weekend.

Did going natural affect your style choices at all?
N:
I’d say “yes”. I feel more daring and adventurous with my style and it works! My hair is such a cool accessory in itself that the sky is the limit for me when it comes to my style.

What are the three favorite things in your closet?
N:
Good question! I have so many, but if I had to pick only three, I’d say my DIY bleached jean jacket, my leopard oxford shoes and my vintage Liz Claiborne cross body bag. Style to me is such a wonderful expression of one’s self. No one defines it but you. Some people may be uncomfortable with the expression and that’s OK as long as you continue to do and be you.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
N:

Her hair is so thick! I love it! you go girrrlllll 🙂

BTW — I will be doing the reverse to what you did. I’m a loose natural now, but I plan to loc my hair soon 🙂

Thanks DiJah! Funny thing is, my hair isn’t thick at ALL!! To make it look fuller, at night, I only place my hair in 3–4 twist. When I do more, my hair doesn’t look as full.

Hello Nia!

I have one simple question: All of the twist outs I’ve seen are twisted from root to tip. I’ve noticed that you braid yours at the roots then continue to twist form to the end.…. is there a difference ? What type of results do you get?

Hi Nadine,

For me, braiding my roots first stretches my hair a bit and adds lots of volume to my roots. When I do a complete twist, I don’t get this result until days later. Doing the braid/twist doesn’t impact the end result (e.g. there are no differences in textures). I twist my hair the test of the way because when I used to do a complete braid, my hair would be too stretched on the ends for me. So doing the twist the rest of the way, helps me keep some curl at the bottom.

Hi Sabrina,

Thanks! My hair isn’t thick at all. When I braid/twist it, I only put about 3–4 in.
