Rihanna took to the American Idol Stage to perform her new single, “Where Have You Been” and rocked a new look, faux locs. The song is supposed to have a tribal feel, so that could be the reason for the new look, but Rihanna also revealed that she’s wanted to try locs since she was a teen, tweeting:
Their HOT! [I wanted them] since I was 14, but mama Fent’z wasn’t havin it!
I gotta say, I think they’re quite beautiful on Ri! Ladies, what do you think of the look? More pictures are below.
i like it.. buuuut i wish she didnt have the straight bangs
Thats exactly what I was thinking. I wish she’s committed her whole head to the style. I do like her shaved sides though.
TOTALLY agree. I was thinking the exact same thing.
Yeah me too! I really love the locs but the bangs are throwing it a bit. She looks beautiful as usual though. Love this lady!!
+1 =)
+1 It looks off with the texture diffrence.
I totally agree. I guess she wanted to cover her forehead, but the hairstylist should’ve convinced her otherwise
+1
I actually think the straight bangs give it a different, unique twist. Its beautiful.
She is an island girl. I love it! Looks good.
As an island girl, I’m pretty annoyed by this. The straight bangs and the fake ras? No thank you.
The “island girl” thought popped into my head as well. Unfortunately, we don’t get to see that side of her more often.
it is cute. Minus the bangs. love that she is wearing locs, i think it is cool/
I’m with Vanisha; they would’ve been great…if not for those straight bangs, LOL. Otherwise, they’re very nicely done. I do, however, have a bit of an issue with locs always being associated with “primitive” and “tribal” type stuff. Kinda reiterates the incorrect notion that they happen when people don’t take care of their hair. THOSE kinda locs don’t just pop up off your head without MUCH care.
I agree!
Me too. And I’d prefer them if they weren’t fake
+1
I hate the association…I don’t like “tribal”..it’s so nonspecific.
+1 w/ the non-specific ‘tribal’ association..but me likey locs =)
Im feeling it!! I love it!!!!
So, I’m all about normalizing natural hair, but whats with the bang? I dont have a solid opinion, I have questions. Is this more about approved texture and “safe” kinks? This style of nap, but at THIS length and THIS texture?
to be clear, Rhi is an entertainer and any statement that she makes should be treated as someone who has had a tremendous amount of home schooling while gearing up a career that involves singing about “Birthday Cake”.
Finally, I’m rocking Badu braids, mostly weave right now, so I’m obviously not too upset about it. 🙂
Lol! Your post made me giggle, thanks!
Oooo weeee! I bet you look FABBBBB-O-LOUS!! WERK!! =)
We have to understand that what Rihanna does is an artform. We have to just respect it and leave it alone.
Unfortunately, she performs to please US, the public. Therefore we are entitled to express our opinions. And if she were smart, she would listen to what we have to say.
If she were “smart,” she’do whatever the hell she wants with her hair and not give a damn about pleasing anyone but herself.
I love it!!! I wish she would have ditched the straight bangs in the front tho kinda throws it off but I love the look on her! Go RIRI!!
I think they are cute and I don’t like the bangs. But you’ve got to remember, she has a huge forehead and probably doesn’t want that shown. That’s one reason why I haven’t worn braids or other styles like that.
Ohhhhh…completely forgot about the forehead…a lil bit of contour/shading would minimize a mighty forehead. Gosh, I love big forheads probably b/c I have a very low forehead (not Theresa Guidice type, but not too much larger =( LOL!
FYI for short’heads’:
Off topic, but that’s why protective updo styles, headwraps, and turbans work for me b/c they add vertical lines to my short small baby head. LOL!
Omg, I lol’d at your Theresa comment. I’m from Jersey, so I immediately thought of her! Too funny!
Yeah I agree, the straight bangs threw this off for me.
I just find it funny how it seems that those who commented are “cool” with her wearing fake locs, but have a problem with her real straight hair.…Seriously, she is not “natural”, and fake locs, isn’t that a cliche‘? At the end of the day, it’s her hair, and I could care what style she is rocking from day to day, as much as she does to her hair, its a wonder she has any left, and it can’t be healthy.…
She can rock anything. I approve although the style could use some minor adjustments nonetheless she still looks great.
I just do not think this is cute at all. They look really fake and the bangs are just off. I also do not care for this being linked to a “tribal” look but when she wants to be beautiful and fem she has piles of straight weave. Her mother’s dislike of locs is very telling especially coming from a Caribbean woman. Every time I am in the Caribbean I see women with the most beautiful long, well maintained locs.
Well, Rihanna’s worn kinky/curly weaves and styles that many did not at first consider “beautiful” or feminine. A LOT of women in the Caribbean dislike locs, my mother is one. It’s not right, but it’s not unusual.
If you were from the Caribbean you’d understand the historical reasons for the negative associations with locs. In the 70’s and 80’s people did not associate or allow their children to associate with people who had dreadlocks let alone wear the style themselves and people with dreadlocks were heavily discriminated against. Rastafarianism was not accepted in the mainstream. Even today some Caribbean people have lingering distaste for locs. I would love to try locs but my husband wouldn’t have it.
I love it on Rihanna!
Same goes for African culture. Locs were associated with people with mental illness. Fortunately, this is changing and starting to be considered “cool”.
As a Jamaican, I have to say you’re 100% right. Up to 2 years ago I wanted to get locs and my parents said HELL to the no! I find it ridiculous considering they both have close friends with the style but apparently I’m going to damage my career prospects if I do it.
Very cute but those bangs ‑_- make me extra angry
Who cares, could’nt care less if she was wearing a hat shaped like poo.
Who cares, couldn’t care less if she was wearing a hat shaped like poo.
I think you mean’t isn’t that an oxymoron… She has waayy to much going on. The shaved sides, the straight bangs, the fake locks! Ilk! My usual opinion about her shananigans! The red hair was the worse! Looked like she fell into a vat of kool aid!
The worse part still is that she is a pretty girl!!!
No. Her body is amazing though! And the woman to her left in the last pic should be on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar.
That beautiful woman on Ri’s left was the first person I noticed in the last pic.Good guggamugga.…. Stunning!!!I wanna highlight that pretty skin w/ some golden hues!
I don’t like them. I know they’re “faux locs” but to me, they look way too costume‑y, like the Rastafarian locs one would buy at Ricky’s for Halloween. And I agree with those who have already commented on the implied “primitive” connotations when it comes to locs. Sorry, Ri-Ri, but this is a fail.
+1
Rihanna rocks a variety of styles — this is just one of the styles in her arsenal. Next week, she’ll probably die it fire engine red again; she likes to experiment with her hair. I see it for what it is — a trendy celebrity hair style. I don’t make much of it, but I do think that Rihanna likes natural weaves/wigs based upon some of her recent hair choices though I don’t *believe* she’s natural. Who knows, maybe she is natural under her wigs/weaves. You can bet, though, that folks will be trying this faux locs look because she wore it.… Read more »
not feeling it,sorry.the straight bangs/locs combo makes the look even worse. At lest she’s more or less covered here.
I like em!
Rihanna has had those bangs for a while now. She probably didn’t want to get rid of the bangs but wants to rock the dreadlocks. I like that Rihanna styles herself the way that she wants to — for some reason I doubt her “people” convinced her to rock the dreadlocks. I wonder if she plans to actually rock dreads as a style — she seems to love the shock effect from changing her hair. I wouldn’t mind at all, I love her unapologetic attitude when it comes to style.
omg like seriously girl. everytime i see u, u look more stupid and more ugly
What do you look like?
I think the style is unique and beautiful and the straight bangs give it that beautiful twist and proves how versatile Black style and hair is.
Rihanna is gorgeous and can rock any style as she proves.

Cute.
A woman I belly dance with makes handmade locs…
the bangs a hot mess but i like the rest of it tho
I hate fake locs! Don’t like to see it on anyone
This woman cannot do wrong. She does what she want. Screw everybody and their opinions. Get it, Ri Ri!
I don’t love it. I like locks, but not these.
I LOVE the whole look. Heifer can’t sing, but she rocks some hair.
Soon as I seen this on American Idol I said ” This is gonna be on BGLH.”
I like it, in fact I was in the middle of take down my yarn braids.
not feelin the ‘faux’ locs.…more insulted than anything else.…wish folx would stop usin the term ‘dread’ as well.…there’s nothing DREADFUL ABOUT OUR LOCCED HAIR!!!
That is a part of the original name and the relation to Rastafarianism, it’s not about the hair being dreadful. Rastas are said to live a ‘dread’ life, as in a life in fear of God (or Jah) so their locks are called ‘dreadlocks’.
So no I don’t think folks are going to stop.
x
Why are you insulted? They are not YOUR locs.
I love her, but I can see why she has bangs, she has a larger forehead.
I love the locks. Ri can rock anything. but, like stated before me… the bangs were the downside of the whole look…
She already took them out it was for a performance so I’m guessing that’s why she left the bangs out but as a performance “prop” they served their purpose. I imagine faux locs are heavy. I would love to try them but I don’t have the patience to sit and get it done
I love it,but what kind of hair is that ?
i thought the closest thing to a kinda of a loc look was yarn braids/twist,but this looks nice.
ew.
+1
but the bangs
I like the shaved sides.
I like fake and real locs.
I like the look. Even the straight bangs. I think it gives her hair a diversity look. Why does it all have to be the same? Shaved sides, faux locs, and straight bangs. She rocked it out! It’s different, it’s versatile and it went with the theme while being fashionable. LOVE IT!
I love this look. She looks like Nerissa Irving.
I love it, even though in the second set of pics she’s servin’ me Predator style..
*faints* Lol!!!!!
So, this bothers me…
“Their HOT! [I wanted them] since I was 14, but mama Fent’z wasn’t havin it!”
I keep hearing that she went to private school all the way up to when she was discovered…and this girl doesn’t know the difference between ‘their’ and ‘they’re’ and ..Fent’z??? what??? what’s with the random apostrophe.
That aside, I think the locs look fine…clearly extensions but not costume store fake imo. I agree with the comments on the “tribal” connotation and the bangs threw it off for me
+1 about the tweet — SPOGG!
Most of the people on this site don’t know the difference between their, they’re and there. Or on any natural hair site to be honest. Maybe we should be reading books…
I need a tutorial on HOW they got em in there. I know ppl with permed hair that would like the look of dreds w/o the commitment. RhiRhi looks cute. Ppl need to get ova the bang. LOL
I think it looks nice, but it seems very heavy! I’m back in forth about locks. For some it looks absolutely divine, but for others it’s just all WRONG!
Aesthetically, yeah man, the locks are hot
morally, NOO!!!.
this is the commercialisation of rastafari. And i know for a fact they do not like that.
So you have to be Rasta to have locks?
did i say that?
chill out
Very chill! I was just trying to be enlightened with something I did not know, but its cool lol…
nah.tbh i’m not an authority on the subject, most of what i know i learnt through googling it. for me… its important to make informed decisions on choices I make re. hair as its always so politicized esp. for black ladies.
on one hand it is just hair. but on the other it isn’t
I’m afraid i don’t like anything fake. I know it’s for show but i don;t find it appealing.
Not a fan of dreads and definitely not with a bang.
i’m not a fan. those sides and the bang just don’t go with it at all, to me.
I like it on her, and it’s cool that she’s familiarizing people with the “look” of locs, even though they’re fake.
She looks beautiful…Love the hair.
It’s great how Rhianna rocks so many different styles, I can’t say I like them all, it doesn’t matter if they are extensions.
I think locs are a great style, I’ve had locks twice in the past and Maxi Priest was my loc idol, looking good.
I like it. I actually thinks the look suits her. I know it’s only temporary though. What do people expect? She has a different look every other day it seems.
Yes. She looks beautiful. I knew that they must be were extensions when I read the headline. I didn’t see her on American Idol. But I’d did heard that she appeared on the show.
Two things that irk me though: 1)They are extensions. 2)Why is this site observing “fake” Natural hair…?
My thoughts exactly Violet!
Rihanna, you’re absolutely beautiful. Like really, your bone structure, body and face wise. This locked style looks great on you, cept the straight bangs are a little weird (^.^). I think if you have the cohunes, which I’m sure you do, you should rock a style that mirrors your natural unprocessed hair texture. It’d just look unbelievably stunning, and also inspire so many little girls out there who are just like you were at one point in time. Not to mention this would change the whole pop diva paradigm. Do it, do it, do it.lol
^^Hopefully she reads this.^^
UM.…. I do like the look on her. I don’t like that bang though. Its a weird combo, the super straight bang, and the twisted faux locs. But overall, I think she could wear locs and look rather beautiful.
Thank you! my issue is the bang. It actually looks like it fits her — the locks — but why couldn’t she have destroyed that awful bang. I like locs but the way she wore it…imma just say that bang shoulda been killed man. But aside from the bang, it’s cute on her.
My thoughts exactly lol :). Hair is hot, straight bang not
Not to fond of it. As a person who wears locs, I don’t consider it a style but a natural way to treat hair. When we wear it for “show” it makes it a fad. My locs are not a fad.
The only thing I would change are the bangs; the dramatic shift in textures throws me off; it would have been cooler if she went “all the way.” Otherwise, it’s a good look!
Why are “observing” fake, natural hair on this site? Some of u dumb ass natural nazi are brainwashed. Get a life. And no its not just a way to treat natural hair. It IS a styling option also. Relax its just hair. RihRih looks beautiful. Straight bang and all. Love the she changes her hair and style. Anybody can wear locs whenever they feel like it.….geesh
I really don’t like them on her but as some one else said I think that’s because of the straight fringe… looks ridiculous with the locs.
Attractive element of content. I simply stumbled upon your web site and in accession capital to say that I get in fact enjoyed account your weblog posts. Any way I’ll be subscribing to your augment and even I success you get right of entry to persistently quickly.
What?!?
I give Rihanna an A for attempt. But straight bangs and fake locs isn’t really natural, isn’t it? It’s not really natural for her.
#they’re
