Carla // Multi-Texture Style Icon

*Prepared for BGLH by Meosha Tall of 1MeNaturally

How would you describe your texture?
C:
I would describe my hair as a mix of different textures: 4a on the sides and crown, 3c in the back, and 3a on the top. My strands are fine everywhere except the top where my 3a hair is. It is very coarse and non-porous there. And my hair is VERY dense!

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
C:
My styling regimen is fairly simple. I follow the CG (curly girl method) faithfully. I feel that this is one of the reasons my hair has retained length. I cowash my hair (in four sections) every 4 days. I do it every 4 days because I wear wash and go styles mostly and this is how long they look their best in my opinion. It also diminishes the amount of tangles I get if I go ahead and wash it on day 4. I’ve gotten the entire washing/styling process down to 40 minutes! And I have ALOT of hair! So I’m proud of that. I also finger detangle now which has done wonders for my hair. I used to use a Denman brush and I lost a lot more hair that way.

I deep condition my hair once a week, either overnight or let it sit on my hair under a shower cap for a couple of hours. After cowashing, I use a leave-in conditioner and rake gel throughout my hair in small sections and allow it to air dry. During winter months, I may sit under a warm hooded dryer for 20 minutes to speed up the process. When I get tired of fooling with my hair (which doesn’t happen often), I will put it in twists and keep them in for a couple of weeks.

My favorite products to use at the moment: As I Am Coconut Co-Wash, Keracare Naturals Leave-In Conditioner, Kiss My Face Upper Management Gel mixed with a small amount of castor oil, and Organicals Deep Conditioning Creme as my Deep Treatment. My favorite moisturizers are SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Masque and Blended Beauty Curl Styling Butter. All of my favorites can be found on my blog: www.fyecurls.com

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style?
C:
My go-to hairstyle is usually a wash n go. However, if my hair is a mess and I need to be out of the door quickly, I will do a high puff and slick those baby hairs down and I’m good! You can’t tell me nothin! 🙂

How do you combat shrinkage?
C:
Shrinkage on my hair is not too bad, but if I want more length I will pineapple my hair at night or blow dry my roots (on medium low) while pulling my hair gently.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require extra care and attention?
C:
I have 2 areas that require special care. One is a very thin/bald spot on my right edge. This came from wearing my hair too tight when I was relaxed. So I baby it by keeping it moisturized, being gentle in that area, and trying not to wear my hair tight anymore. The other is the drastically looser curls on top. It has taken me awhile, but I finally figured out ways to help it blend in better and curl more to match the rest of my hair. Some of these ways include scrunching, not ever combing or brushing it, and washing it in twists which helps maintain more curl.

What are 2 do’s for your texture?
C:
Washing/Styling in 4 sections and deep conditioning often.

What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
C:
Wearing it “out” when it’s not “set” either with gel or twists. I get terrible single strand knots every time I try that. The other would be combing while dry. That’s a great way to lose hair!

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
C:
Yes, my blog is: www.fyecurls.com

Crazy how everyone’s hair is different. I was co washing and it was breaking my hair too much. So now I wash and condition my hair once a week and I’ve been using Herbal Essences Hello Hydration and that works wonders on my hair. I use VO5 Moisture Milks conditioner as a leave in and use a coconut/shea butter oil complex and finish off with Eco Styler gel. Recently I have been using Tresseme but it dries my hair out, don’t like it.

Carla, your hair is beautiful AND so very healthy! I was glad to see someone else using the AS I am Co-Wash with great results. I use it too and Co wash once a week and wash once a week with the As I Am shampoo. I think both of these products are great for people who want/need to co-wash more frequently. Your regimen (styling and all) sounds very similar to mine- which took me a minute to establish. It has been working very well for me! Your pics further prove that it works! Thanks for sharing your story with… Read more »

The puff is killer!
I feel like I am the only one with DRASTIC differences in texture. My front is like 2a and the rest is a mixture of the latter 3 & and 4’s. Whatever it is, Im nervous for it to get long, as itll be more noticeable

I have drastic differences too and sometimes don’t like explaining it to people who want to hear one or the other. My hair ranges from very smooth, straight and wavy to spongy coils, it’s been a trial getting to know all the textures and understanding how to treat them right but it’s been an interesting experience. Great interview, liked her site!

Reply to  Annie L.

My hair also has drastic differences. The hair on the left side is mostly slightly wavy, the hair on the right side is tight 4a curls. The crown is very kinky and course with small corkscrew coils. the back has loose 3c curls. I dare not do wash and goes because my hair is on 5-6 inches long so the textures are VERY noticeable.

She’s so right about the single strand knots. I have trouble with the same thing. How do you minimize that problem?
