Halea // Natural Hair Bride

Avatar • Apr 17, 2012

We married March 24, 2012 in my hometown of Memphis. Being the dramatic DIVA I am, I wanted to make a head turning entrance. I chose a venue with southern charm that also featured a grand staircase. I thought walking down those stairs would make me the show stopper I always dreamed of being on my wedding day. Little did I know those stairs would cause me so much anxiety. I had nightmares of falling for months. I even had to have a glass of wine to relax me right before walking down the aisle because I was literally trembling!

How was your big day?
H:
Perfect in that I married the love of my life. Of course all weddings have a few glitches but it’s the marriage not the wedding that really counts. We had the best wedding party EVER! There was no drama and I can honestly say everyone standing by our sides have genuine love for us. When I look back at the stunning photos taken by our extraordinary photographer, Lance Thurman (http://www.lanceomarthurman.com/), I wouldn’t change a thing about that day.

The weather was perfect and the venue decorated beautifully. I’m still getting rave reviews on the color combination (fuchsia and orange) which most people thought was horrible until they saw them together. Our venue did the catering and I’ve heard the food was great! I was too excited to eat that day. It was wonderful to have both of our families and friends come together to celebrate our union, and a day I shall cherish forever.

How did you wear your hair?
H:
I wore my hair in a twist out pulled to one side. This is my absolute fave hairstyle and how I wear my hair most of the time.

What was your process of deciding how to style your hair?
H:
It never occurred to me to wear my natural hair. I just thought it wouldn’t be pretty or elegant enough…sad but true. I was going to either straighten it or wear a weave. As a recovering weaveaholic (lol), I was leaning more towards the weave. But in the back of mind, something about covering or taming my natural hair just didn’t feel right. I felt like a hypocrite. Here I was claiming to love my hair in it’s natural state, yet I didn’t feel like it was “good enough” to wear on my special day. Now don’t get me wrong, I still believe it’s okay to be versatile (weave, straighten, etc..) but I knew I still had some unresolved issues about my natural hair that I needed to come to grips with.

I began scouring the Internet for photos of natural brides. As a daily stalker of bglh-marketplace.com, I happened to stumble upon a feature on a natural bride. I was inspired and encouraged by all the brides and their creativity. I still however, was not completely convinced.

It was about a month before the wedding at my makeup consultation. My fabulous makeup artist, Tasha Anders (www.facebook.com/tasha.anders) created the perfect wedding look for me. My husband loves my eyes so accentuating them was a must. And that she did! With makeup that dramatic (not to mention the custom made headpiece) I knew my hair had to be just as funky! What’s more funky than a black woman with a fly twist-out, fro, braid-out, bantu knots…well, you get the picture.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
