*Prepared for BGLH by Meosha Tall of 1MeNaturally
C: My name is Carnisha. I live in Houston, Texas and I’m reppin’ Houston born and raised!! I do a lot of things, lol. I work full time, got to school, wife, mom, and I make my own all natural bar soap.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
C: When I was pregnant with my daughter my stylist made me stop getting relaxers. I became very curious about my natural hair texture and decided I wanted to be able to have the same hair as my daughter.
When and how did you transition into natural hair?
C: I didn’t transition. One day after coming home from work I told my husband that I was ready to cut my hair off. He set up his at home barbershop and cut my hair all off. When he finished, mine was shorter than his, lol!
In what ways (if any) has going natural affected you?
C: I am much more conscious of what chemicals I subject myself and my family to. I am much more confident. I cannot hide behind my hair anymore. I am very shy, but I love talking to people about my journey.
How would you describe your hair?
C: My hair is very thick, kinky, curly, somewhat cooperative hair. I love my hair. I don’t really follow the hair typing system, but someone has told me I am a 3c/4a.
What is your regimen?
C: I follow a pretty consistent regimen on my hair. I wash my hair every other Thursday, I use the Shea Moisture line, and I use Aussie Moist to detangle and leave in. After washing and detangling I will twist my hair in about 25 twists and let dry overnight. I just re-twist every other night until wash day. My twist out always looks best on Sunday for church 🙂 For moisture I use water, olive oil and coconut oil. I really like using my steamer at least once a month if time permits. My hair feels sooo soft afterwards.
How do you retain length and moisture in your hair?
C: I have been very pleased with my growth!! It’s amazing to see my big chop picture to how much hair I have now. I try not to manipulate my hair too much. I am very careful when I detangle. I try to trim every other month to help reduce ssk’s. (I get those a lot if I wear a WnG)
What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
C: Early on, I colored my hair and over time it began to feel like straw. I don’t think my hair likes at home box colors :(. If I ever get another color, I will get it done professionally.
What’s the best/most effective thing you do for your hair?
C: Moisturize! Condition! Steam!
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
