Solange Knowles Looks Lovely in Rwanda

Avatar • Mar 7, 2012

These posted photos from Solange’s Tumblr page are of a recent trip to Rwanda. I’m loving her fro and the TWAs on the girls she took photos of. Ladies, what do you think? More photos below.

I really like the picture of her on the bike. She looks so relaxed and natural (and I’m not just talking about her hair).

It reminds me of my own experience where i used to ride a bike to school during my high school days.

I do love her spirit. Rwanda, Uganda, fro, and all…linking the African Diaspora with a quiet elegance that makes loud statements.

Solange, solange, solange! I love and admire her seemingly free spirit and her style is dope.

I hope some day Solange will have a platform for little girls and young ladies about self awareness and loving our culture and input of building our culture to the highest it can be.. for the next generation.. I say this since she is photographed everywhere and anywhere.. US and abroad she has been named a Natural hair phenomenon by the natural hair community and placed on a pedestal of all natural hair forums. Before she cut her hair she attempted a music career and no one really paid her any attention then when she cut her hair she was… Read more »

and before anyone gets at me regarding her in Africa …for all we know it is another photo shoot for yet another magazine that she is being paid big money for. Not necessarily there to help the people or gain knowledge to share and build with others..

She doesn’t have to be a spokesperson for anything, just let her be, dang. People are always demanding that celebs be role models and dedicate their time to this or that.

I’m not saying that at all actually I dont think she has credentials to be a spokes person for anything of big substance.. what I am saying is the natural hair community has to stop deeming her as “our spoke person/model” If you are going to hand over such a title that that encourages companies to sort and pay huge amounts of money just to show case you then by all means have something positive to say for the women that are always watching your every move and loving your style and what they think to be your life style…

I agree with you Nubia. I like Solange, but a part of me feels that she totally pimped the natural hair thing once she figured out it was the only angle that was getting her the attention she had been craving for so long. Good for her, but so funny how all the natural hair bloggers were so quick to jump on her bandwagon, when in the beginning, she was so careful to keep saying that her cutting her hair was just another look in her repertoire, a phase, etc. In other words, she wasn’t embracing & celebrating natural hair… Read more »

Black women…We can be a trip sometimes” WTF?

Who are you? President of the Hanging on Solange Knowles Ballsack fan club?

Did you even read my post????

Newsflash: this is a public forum. People can have differences of opinion without it being “hating”.I like her too, but I feel how I feel.

We’re expressing a point of view, no one is being nasty or disrespectful. That’s why they posted the item, for it to be discussed.

So you can relax with that “Black women can be a trip”, cattiness.

Flygyrl72, I was attempting to respond to Nubia’s post, but my post wound up under yours. But in retrospect I should have included you a self-professed “Natural Nazi”. Who would be proud to associate themselves with a Nazi? Not a Solange fan and cannot tell you anything about her music, but I am a fan of sisterhood and encouragement. I do not decide whether someone is “worthy” or “authentic” enough to rock their hair the way it grows from their scalp. This idea is absurd. Everyone one of us has our reasons for going natural and there is NO one… Read more »

What soap box?! What National Natural Hair Council? Is that even a real council?! WTF are you even talking about?! There’s so much here, I dunno where to even begin. Dunno if I should even bother, you’re not the sharpest pencil in the box, that’s becoming more & more apparent…there’s a disconnect happening somewhere between you reading actual words & your comprehension levels… Nappy Nazi is a just a term sometimes used in the natural hair community to describe a more militant natural hair wearer, stop quibbling over semantics. Do you seriously think I’m associating myself with the Third Reich???… Read more »

If you seriously read my posts, you would know that I am TOTALLY against disparaging comments that would dispariging about reasons why women go natural. You are NOT the ONlY person on this site with an opinion. I am of the opinion that you have a right to be wrong. I have expressed this opinion. So, if-so facto you believe this, why all the hostility? I do not consider my response to be, as you say “talking out the side of my neck”. People generally use the phrase ” I don’t consider you a worthy opponent” to anyone who doesn’t… Read more »

I think she looks beautiful. Everyone has a path to follow, and just like you r uncovering yours I am sure she is discovering hers. Lets not always b so quick to throw out “but” everytime we say something positive about one of our sisters.

Why? Little girls’ mothers should be teaching them self-awareness and self-respect.

That’s the matter with American culture. We are always looking to the outside to provide us with “role models”. What’s wrong with mothers? They are not famous enough to be taken seriously as role models?

Is Solange the only natural “celebrity” in the world? My goodness, almost every week there is an article about her. Her hair looks nice, but there have to be others…

You should find them and start your own blog since it bothers you.

Wow, there are a lot of Solange stans on this site.

No, I don’t mean the Natural Style icons. I mean celebrities besides Solange who –you have to admit– is often featured on BGLH.

I do have a blog, by the way…

Others? Like the ones that are posted on this site daily as “Natural Style Icons”?

Maybe you should check out the rest of the site and not just click on the “Solange” editorial content.

It doesnt seem to be a mag shoot, but it could be. I actually kind of like that we are seeing a celebrity vacation in an African country without trying to “save” it and adopt a child or some other patronizing ish. Just taking in the beauty of the scenery and people because it’s a nice place to be. It’s a welcome change from what I usually see.

The beauty about going natural is that everyone had their own reasons for doing it. Some want to get closer to their roots or have a spiritual awakening. Some are going bald because their hair can’t stand relaxers. Some just like the look. Every story is as unique as their hair is. Whatever Solange’s reasons for going natural are, as a natural stylist and proud member of the natural hair community, I applaud her for having the confidence to be herself. I would like to think that she receives as much fame for being herself as her sister receives infamy… Read more »
