R: I’m Chantay Davenport and I have an alias…Ronae Parker aka C. Ronae for my business minded self. I was born and raised in Decatur, GA. However, I currently reside in Houston, TX. I came here as a short-term summer visit and great things happened to make me stay for a while longer. But please believe I will be returning to the A soon 🙂
I am a Customer Service representative for the corporate office of a women’s clothing and accessory boutique. I am also working on my 2nd degree in Graphic Design. Full time work load, part-time student, entrepreneur, boyfriend = busy life.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
R: I honestly was tired of perms. I really just wanted to give something new a try. Besides, I have never seen so much support and encouragement for something like this before. Going natural has really become a movement.
When and how did you transition into natural hair?
R: It is an interesting story. When I graduated from LSU in 2008 I wanted to get a sew-in for graduation. After getting my first sew-in I never wanted to go back. Not necessarily thinking of going natural; every time I went to my stylist to redo my hair, she would trim a little bit more off. By the time I decided to wear my hair out, not only had my perm completely grown out, but I noticed that there was this natural hair revolution going on. And I wanted to be a part of it. Lol. But no, I didn’t do the big chop or anything.
In what ways (if any) has going natural affected you?
R: It has definitely made me more confident with my hair. I get compliments all the time, which is never a bad thing. I feel empowered with my hair and style. It is something I can do, take care of and improve myself, so it saves me money. Also, my hair is longer than it’s ever been since I was a little girl. I love putting my hair in different styles. I can wear it curly or straight. It’s really something magical about being natural. My hair makes me happy, plain and simple.
How would you describe your hair?
R: It’s VERY thick. 4b type I guess. In cold weather I have great hair, in humidity it goes POOF very fast.
What is your regimen?
R: I’m a product junkie, but my most recent products are Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer and Bee Hold Curly Butter for styling. I use Herbal Essences Hello Hydration 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner. I also use Carol’s Daughter Tui Moisturizing Hair Smoothie for deep conditioning. And last but not least, a Coconut + Jojoba oil mix for moisture. I wash my hair once a week and then co-wash every other week.
How do you retain length and moisture in your hair?
R: If I wear my go to style which is a braid out, I will re-moisturize and re-braid my hair every night. Basically no matter what style I put my hair in, up-do, bantu knots, buns, etc. I MOISTURIZE.
What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
R: Letting my hair be dry for days at a time. With natural hair you have to really be attentive and take care of your locs, or they will knot up and break off.
What’s the best/most effective thing you do for your hair?
R: Eating healthy, drinking water and taking my vitamins. Which is really something I could do more of. But it all starts internally.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
R: I have a blog; it’s called Suppledippity. You can go to suppledippity.blogspot.com to check it out. I plan on doing many more posts in the upcoming month. My tumblr is lovesoredic.tumblr.com. Oh and my twitter(s): @Luv_TayRonae (Personal) and @Suppledippity (Blog)
Anything else you want to add?
R: I will be opening an online boutique this summer (fingers crossed) called (O&S) for hair accessories, headbands that I’ve designed especially for us naturals (some are in my pictures) as well as frocks, shoes and home items. So if you would like to receive updates on the opening, please email me at email@example.com.
