Introduce yourself!
J:
My name is Jordan and I’m from Virginia/DC. I’m in Grad School right now getting my MFA in Graphic Design 🙂

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
J:
I made the decision to go natural because I hate relaxers. They are in my opinion, unnecessary and useless. I love the natural texture of my hair and wanted to embrace it.

When and how did you transition into natural hair?
J:
My decision to go natural was something I wanted to do for so long, but couldn’t because my mother wouldn’t allow it until I was 18 (crazy right?) I had been transitioning my entire senior year of high school (back in 2007). I wore braids mostly, and sometimes just pulled back into a ponytail. When my birthday rolled around in May I chopped off all my relaxed hair in my bathroom while listening to Tupac. I’ll never forget the look on my mother’s face when she walked past…“You really did it…” I’ve always wanted to wear my hair natural. I love the texture of my hair, the color, the everything…I feel like such a queen wearing my natural hair, it’s really indescribable.

In what ways (if any) has going natural affected you?
J:
Going natural to me was really empowering and life changing. Trying to find the best natural, organic products to use on my hair has promoted a more natural, organic lifestyle for me. The way I eat has changed, my overall perspective on what’s important has changed, and my overall quality of life has changed all for the better. I know it may not seem that “deep” to most, but being natural in my opinion doesn’t just have to do with my hair.

How would you describe your hair?
J:
My hair is super thick! When I wore an afro it was HUGE. I loved it. So naturally I have thick locs as well. My texture is soft and kinky. lol. I’m not sure what category I fit in, but hopefully you will be able to tell from the pics.

What is your regimen?
J:
My regimen is pretty simple. I wash my hair every week with Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap (Lavender or Mint scent). I retwist every 3–4 weeks with just water. Sometimes I may use a little coconut oil on my scalp, but that is it. For locs, less is definitely more when it comes to products. Unlike loose naturals, loc-wearers are more prone to retaining build-up and should avoid heavy product use.

How do you retain length and moisture in your hair?
J:
…Honestly I just let my hair do its own thing. Locs are much easier to maintain than a loose fro.

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
J:
I didn’t make too many mistakes with my hair, but I do notice that a lot of loc-wearers retwist their hair wayyyyy too much and it definitely will affect the strength and thickness of your locs.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
J:
My blog is http://unexpecteddelight.tumblr.com — there I mostly blog about natural hair and hiphop/music. Take a look if you’re interested. I’m also on YouTube: https://YouTube.com/lovelyjor.

I love her locs! I am one of her youtube subcribers (naturaljerseygurl). Looking at her videos is what solidified my decision to loc my hair 18 months ago. Way to go, Jordan! Best of luck to you.

You’re already natural, Talisa. Why do you need “guts” to loc your hair?

Sheri, I won’t speak for Talisa, but I am already natural, and I need guts. I need guts because I’ve heard that the early phase of locs can be the “awkward” phase, and also, I need guts to commit (something I have a hard time with) to the semi-permanent state of locs.

Yep, me too! Saw you on Youtube, when you did that style with one pin after washing and retwisting. Your locks are beautiful, mine are nice but I want nicer ones like yours, very healthy looking.

So, I am going to take your advice and stop interlocking, and then retwist every 2 months.

Thank you xxx

Your locs are lovely!! I have had my locs since November 2011..so I assume that I am still in the starter loc phase :P. Although I have been natural since 2002.I loooove my locs and wish that I would have decided to do so years ago. At this point I’m only washing when necessary and re-twisting at that time and that’s working well for me. I hope to see more from you, I’ll have to check out your youtube videos!!
