2. Everyday/Regular Washing: SLS free
Many naturals love and sing the praises ‘sulfate-free’ shampoos which are said to be less drying and less damaging.
Effect on Skin: Sulfate free shampoos will also dissolve oil on the surface of the skin but are not as effective as SLS shampoo and therefore leave behind some oil. This is the reason why they are not as irritating.
Effect on Hair: Similar to the effect on skin, sulfate free shampoos will dissolve oil to some extent but not fully. This is the reason why some will not recommend them for washing off silicones and mineral oil. However, SLS free shampoos do cleanse fairly well and if you do find build up, there is always the option of doing a clarifying wash with an SLS product. Using a hair conditioner post wash is recommended.
Advances: Strictly speaking ‘sulfate’ is not the reason why a shampoo is irritating. The main ingredient that causes irritancy is SLS. There are shampoos which state ‘SLS free’ and not ‘sulfate free’ . They may contain sulfates such as SLES which are not irritating to skin.
When to use: If you regularly wash your hair or have a low oil routine, SLS free shampoos are for you.
