Favorite natural hair brands at Target/Walgreens/Whole Foods?

• Jun 25, 2011

Reader Anaya says;

I think it’s amazing that natural hair products are so accessible to us. Between Target, Walgreens and Whole Foods there are quite a few options! My question is;

Which natural hair brands do you pick up when you’re at Target, Walgreens or Whole Foods? Which ones are your favorites? Best quality for the money? Best on your hair?

I’ve liked just about everything I’ve tried from Shea Moisture. I’ve only tried one thing from Curls and I wasn’t impressed. I refuse to buy Miss Jessies, and that Twisted Sista doesn’t look appealing to me.

Why won’t you buy Miss Jessies?

Zeesmama

It’s ridiculously expensive for the ingredients.

I’m not paying that much money for hair products.

All of Miss Jessie’s products contain petroleum and mineral oil which are bad for your hair locking out any potenital moisture.

luvs
Guest

I agree. Before people buy a product just because everyone else has use it, please read the ingredients. Miss Jessie has mineral oil in their product.

Shea Moisture is great!!! I am very happy its now in walgreens..

I LOVE Shea Moisture, it has become my brand of choice. Organic, natural and made for my coils love it!

The only brand I’ve tried that is made specifically for Natural Hair is Shea Moisture. The other brands are often too expensive or not what I’m willing to pay. Shea Moisture is a great line and very affordable.

The only product/line that I use that’s sold at Target is Whipped Moisture by Curls. The Shea Moisture line absolutely does not work for my hair. From time to time, if pressed, I’ll buy oils at Whole Foods.

Twisted Sista (Target) smells good, and works pretty well but does not last long at all. I am thinking about trying Shea Moisture soon.

I’m on the SheaMoisture bandwagon. The Deep Treatment Masque in particular has been a wonderful multi-purpose product for me (3c-4a, porous, thick but fine). I use it for twists/braid outs, conditioning, and even as an occasional moisturizer. I’ve never tried Miss Jessie’s.

Tonia

I have that masque…I need to try it for twist outs.

I like Sheamosture products alot and the Pantene Hydrating Curls Conditioner when I’m able to find it. Also check out this handsome 4yr old little boy that does kids modeling. http://www.blackcelebkids.com/2011/06/24/upcoming-christopher-armstrong-iii-is-a-fisher-price-kid/

Just went to Target yesterday and they had everything from the SheaMoisture line except for what I wanted–the Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I was so saddened lol. Instead, I picked up their curly hair milk, hopefully I get good results!

i luv the the hair milk. i use it as a leave in and also use it after a taking a shower with a cap on. i just rub some on my chunky twists or twists out.

I just tried several items from Shea Moisture. I absolutely love the Purification Masque, I tried the Restorative Conditioner as my leave in and later in the week will try the Hibiscus smoothie for a dry twist out. So far, I’m pleased. I just may be hooked on the Purification Masque…it really soothed my scalp. I got all of these from the Walgreens by my job.

octavia

luv that purifiocation masque hair was soft and stopped my scalp it from me experimenting putting oils on my scalp.

SheaMoisture products! I love their curl enhancing smoothie. I have also tried their black soap shampoo. While I am not a fan of the smell of the shampoo, it has definitely helped with dry scalp. I also like their restorative conditioner. I was glad to find products that worked well so that I am not continually playing a game of trial and error.

At Target, I am all about Shea Moisture. The most affordable and it works. My favorite lines are the Yucca and Baobab and the Raw Shea Butter. I also love the Giovanni and Yes to Cucumbers/Carrots Conditioners. YTC can also be found at Walgreen’s, as can Shea Moisture. I don’t buy products from Whole Foods, because I want to have some money leftover for more than just hair.

Unfortunately, my Target doesn’t carry the brands that you all are mentioning (I live in a predominantly white suburb neighborhood that I am itching to get out of!). So, I’ve had to go elsewhere. The best thing I’ve found & took a risk on was Beautiful Curls. I just recently purchased their deep conditioner & their leave in. OH MY GOD, best stuff ever. The DC is *amazing* & the curl enhancing leave in makes my curls pop, moisturized, & frizz-free. I plan on using nothing else. I especially like Beautiful Curls because they’re fair trade (for life), & they… Read more »

White people are still prejudice about selling hair products for black hair. Why do black women fall for this crap. Most companies that sell you guys products are owned by white people. You’ll never, ever get it.

Gloria

Shea Moisture, definitely. It works, the ingredients
are great, and it’s affordable.

Everything else is a little too expensive, so I haven’t tried it…I almost had a heart attack when I saw the price of some of the Miss Jessie’s procucts, lol.

Vivianne

Yes, you can get sticker shock from Miss Jessie’s but you also get A LOT of product for the money. I’ve had a tub of her Curly Pudding for 7 months now and after several wash n go’s, braid-outs and twist-outs, I have barely scratched the surface. I don’t think I’ll be done with it for another year at a minimum. Mind you, I’m very aware of the ingredients and believe as long as I don’t use it every single day, my hair will be just fine. So far so good.

My fave brand at Target or Walgreens in Shea Moisture. The products are super moisturizing, have awesome ingredients and are affordably priced–What’s not to love?! It also warms my heart that the company is Black-owened. My fave products are the Raw Shea Butter Shampoo and Deep Treatment Masque (used as a leave-in). I stockpiled during the Walgreen’s BOGO so I have enough Shea Moisture for a loooong time! My fave brand at Whole Foods is Alaffia. It’s my fave in my head though–I haven’t got around to purchasing just yet. I love that the products are all natural, fair trade… Read more »

Ditt about Alaffia. It smells heavenly too and the consistency seems perfect. I finally bought it last week, but havent used it yet. Bought the Curl-activating Shea butter leave-in Conditioner

Contrary to all others who have responded, my favorite product from Target is the Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding. I love the results I get for my twist outs. After the CP, I love Kinky Curly’s Poo and Condish. I’ve tried most everything sold at Target, besides Twisted Sistas and Jane Carter (–i hope to try soon); I enjoy SheaMoisture’s shampoo and Curl Enhancing Smoothie, but don’t really care for Curls line.

As far as Whole Foods, I just buy my rosewater glycerine mix and castor oil.

Lisa1

I buy oils and aloe vera juice and gel at Whole Food, Trader Joe, or Mom’s Organic. I use Oyinhandmade leave-in and pomade so I buy those online and shop at Trader Joe for my basic shampoo and conditioner — alternate between Nourish Spa and Tea Tree Tingle.

God, I would be so happy if there were Shops with good black hair care close to me. All i can buy around the corner are things like Oils and Sheabutter. I can buy good product only in the Internet.

Sometimes u have to really look in beauty supply stores even if the employee says they don’t carry the people on the floor usually aren’t the manager or the person who counts stock it can still be somewhere on a bottom shelf waiting to be used from target and kmart Liked giovanni, Shea moisture, and cantu butter

Larissa

You know I’m german and i live in a small city here. African hair care is not available her that easy 😉 In Hamburg are a lot of afro-shops but there is not so much “natural” Haircare. More relaxers and Wigs. Sometimes i just dont like the ingridents for my children (I’m white). So Internet is the best here for our “Natural hair Community”. in the moment I’m waiting for 2 packages from U.S and one from the Kingdom.

But i love the giovanni leave in. That product is great. The komaza cocounut curly spray and the curly q cocounut conditioner are the best products i ever use ( i love coconut products)
But i hate Fuzzy Duck 🙁

I can’t say what my fave products are because I still have not found the Holy Grail for my hair. However, I must say we have come a long way where we have so many choices for our various hair types. It makes me extremely happy to see so many black entrepreneurs who are filling the demand for great hair care products.

Shea moisture moisture retention shampoo, Shea moisture Curl enhancing smoothie, yes to carrots condish, and Kinky Curly knot today but its cheaper at Ricky’s cause of their student discount so i get that product there.

I love Knot Today and Miss Jessie’s even though the ingredients arent great my hair likes it! Back in the day our mothers used mineral oil and my hair thrived!

Hands down, Shea Moisture. I love their price, ingredients and what they do for my hair. I’ve tried the curl enhancing smoothie for my twistouts, the deep treatment masque for my bi-weekly deep conditioning treatments, and the hold and shine moisture mist. I love those products and I can’t wait to try their conditioners and shampoos. I’ve tried only one curls product and I love the smell. I haven’t tried Miss Jessie’s because I can’t make myself spend almost $50 on ONE thing, especially when Shea Moisture has better ingredients for a lower price. And I can’t forget Kinky Curly!… Read more »

have i entered a shea moisture advertisement?!is this site a wholly owned subsidiary of shea moisture? christ! i’m going to live dangerously and admit a) i’ve never purchased the stuff and b) am quite pleased with my routine, and thusly have no intention of purchasing shea moisture products. kinky-curly products are available at my local WF and target. they make me happy, they smell good, they make my hair happy, and they’re cruelty free. i enjoy the curling custard and the leave-in conditioner. speaking of leave-ins, i am a fan of the cantu shea leave-in for deep conditioning purposes. because… Read more »

I think many of the women on this site love Shea Moisture because it has natural ingredients and the price is just right! Please don’t down others on how they choose to spend their own hard earned money. I would try Kinky-Curly, too, if their prices were better! I can’t get with those super-expensive products at all. I would rather have some money left over for other more important things. To each its own. Take care and God bless!

I usually buy the Shea Moisture products…I currently use the Coconut Hisbiscus Curl and Shine Shampoo and the matching Curl and Style Milk. I’ve tried the Curl Enhancing Smoothie and the Deep Treatment Masque…didn’t really care for them. I’ve never tried Miss Jessie’s since it’s so expensive and didn’t wanna try it knowing I wouldn’t keep purchasing. I’ve tried Kinky Curly Knot Today and it left a weird residue on my hair…so not a fan. Everything else others are mentioning I’ve never tried. When I go to Whole Foods, I’m usually there to pick up jojoba oil and shea butter.

I refuse to shop at Target since finding out that they fund racist tea party candidates.

Tamera
Guest

I haven’t been back there since finding that out either. It’s really unfair. They take our money and fund causes that totally go against our beliefs. I hate it.

Lisa1
Guest

Who comprises this “our”? Shouldn’t you only be speaking for yourself? It is sad when I have to remind a black person that black people are not a monolithic group.

chloe
Guest

You’re right Tamera. It takes a lot of gall for the higher-ups at Target to use revenue generated in part by blacks to fund racist candidates whose aim is to disenfranchise blacks. We don’t exercise our economic power anymore. SMH.

Tamera
Guest

I didn’t specify the beliefs. When I say they go against our beliefs I mean as people–not as black people. And it’s not just my beliefs per say because a lot of people feel that Target supports interests and politicians that go against their beliefs. Not just black people either.

Tamera
Guest
I would also like to point out that the people Target funds support interests that fight against woman’s rights from attempting to slash funding from Planned Parenthood to limiting a woman’s right to have an abortion. Additionally, they support politicians who are anti gay rights (which is why gay people boycotted them bringing the secrets of their special interest funding to the mainstream) in addition to that, they fund politicians who are ready and willing to drive our economy into the ground by signing pledges where they refuse to raise taxes on billionaires which in turn furthers the divide between… Read more »

I love Target (customer service is awesome–store is clean). Guess I will be looking elsewhere. I am buying a lot more online now actually.

Shea’s products were nothing spec for my hair. I have had great results with Oyin. I am a PJunkie so—-lol–

Deep Treatment Masque is my staple product. I use as a creamy moisturizer every other day, and as a leave in after I wash and deep condition. I need to make sure I get both creamy and watery moisturizers into my regimen. The creamy helps with smoothing the cuticle and softening/manageability, the watery just gets good pure watery moisture into my hair.

I’m with you. Deep Treatment Masque is my staple product! Love it as a styling product and feel like I’m wasting it if I use it as a wash-out “deep conditioner.” If as a deep conditioner, I like it while under my steamer with coconut oil.

I love Kinky Curly Curl Custard for my wash n go’s and Knot Today is a great leave-in, but I must agree with several others that Shea Moisture have the best products that moisturize, have the best ingredients, and give you the best value for what you pay! Kinky Curly is great, but can come down on the price. If Miss Jessie’s has mineral oil in it, they’ve GOT to be kidding charging as much as they do.

I’ve only begun using Shea Moisture products recently, and I got them from Target. If you live in Raleigh, NC, I don’t know which Target you’d have go visit to find them; I found them at the one in Knightdale near the Planet Fitness. I first purchased the Curl Enhancing Smoothie, which I have used with additional veggie glycerin (it already has glycerin in it) as a moisturizer. I’ve also used it on my elbows :-). I’ve since tried—and now love—Giovanni Direct Leave-in. It reminds me of Kinky Curly but is more affordable. I got it at Whole Foods, where… Read more »

My fav is Yes to Carrots. Sadly Shea Moisture(smoothie) does not work for me and makes my hair brittle and even if I only use a little it makes my hair look dull…I gave it to a friend but it does the same thing to her hair :(. I haven’t tried the Yes to Carrots Shampoo but I love the conditioner for detangling and dc’ing(I mix it with mayo for the dc though). I wish wish my hair liked shea moisture but so far it hates it so much…i think it’s because my hair is low porosity though. My favorite brands are available from whole foods: Aubrey Organics and Giovanni.
Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle rose is the best DC I’ve ever tried!!! My hair also likes Giovanni 50:50 conditioner.

Yes to Carrots Hair Masque— Target (but i have not seen it there lately)

Giovanni Leave In- Target/Anywhere

I have learned the less product in your hair the better !!!

I’m pretty much over Miss Jessie’s hair products. They do work, but I have found products that work just as well on my hair.…and sometimes even better for half the price. Anywhoo, I definitely pick up the Shea Moisture products. Specifically the Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I don’t use it to enhance my curls (I don’t do wash & gos lol), I use it because it smells good, keeps my hair ssoooooooooooooo soft and it reduces the frizzys when I do bantu knot outs/braid outs or whatever. Their shampoo and conditioners are good too!

I switched over to Shea Moisture in March. I like it a lot! I use the Coconut & Hibiscus shampoo and conditioner. I also bought the curling smoothie in May. I’m currently transitioning, so I don’t do any kind of wash-and-gos, but I use the smoothie in my hair when I’m doing a braid-and-curl. It leaves my hair soft, especially at the roots.

Giovanni Smooth as Silk & the 50:50 shampoo (Whole Foods) Curls moisture shampoo (Target) I just found out that Giovanni is at Target, so I went yesterday & it was on sale for $6 & some change! I love the Curls shampoo b/c a little goes a long way & makes my hair feel good. I use the 50:50 shampoo every few weeks to clarify. The Smooth as Silk is great for detangling. I may switch to something else for detangling though because my hair is very thick, is getting longer, and I’m going through the conditioner rather quickly these… Read more »

I love SheaMoisture coconut & hibiscus and moisture shampoos and hair milk (Target & Walgreens). I use Curls brand products from their site but bought the Goddess gel from Target & it really helped hold my curls & keep it frizz-free without crunch or stickiness. My new love is Queen Helene Royal Curl cream from Whole Foods. Some say it’s a Kinky Curly Curly Custard dupe but I’ve never used that. It’s only $8 and gives me absolutely gorgeous curls: big & fluffy w/o any frizz. And it holds up to humidity, riding w/the windows down & everything.

I had a great find recently at Target, when I was looking for a new sealant that didn’t smell as strongly nutty as my old one. After looking through the ingredient list of nearly every product on the shelf I settled with a bottle of Taliah Waajid’s African Healing Oyl, for $8. I initially didn’t want to buy it because the very first ingredient is mineral oil, but there’s other good stuff in there too. Ingredients: Mineral oil, Almond oil, Kukui nut oil, Amber#166, Vitamin E, Olive oil, Palm oil, Sunflower oil extract, Fragrance. So far my personal experience with… Read more »
