There are the giants — Oyin, Qhemet, Kinky Curly, Carol’s Daughter, Miss Jessie’s — and then there are the up and comers; women quietly mixing products in their kitchens or basements, and selling to family and friends.
Now, we don’t want to enable product junkyism… but we do want to lend a hand — and some recognition — to women who are creating top products for natural women.
So today we want to know; what up-and-coming natural hair brands should we be talking about? Please refrain from shouting out your own brand 🙂
pooka girl – i think thats the name of it..she makes butters which can be used for skin and hair
I think you’re talking about Pooka Pure and Simple (http://www.pookapureandsimple.com/products/haircare.asp)
Morrocco Method
Shea Moisture
Njoi Creations (on Etsy)
The njoi creations is great I bought some stuff that made my hair so soft!!
I was gonna say NJoi, I really dig her stuff!!
There’s a girl on YouTube that sent me a jar of her product called BlairCare Curli Jelli. I tried it in my boo’s hair (first, haha) then tried it in mine. It has the consistency of gel but wasn’t sticky at all and still had quite a bit of hold. I commend her for getting people to try her products to give her feedback FIRST, before trying to sell it to everyone.
I bought the BlairCare Curli Jelli at a natural hair show here in Houston. I really like it. It is one of my staples now.
I’ve heard nothing but great things about Koils By Nature!
I agree. I love KBN!
[…] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Cassandra, l g, Black Girl Long Hair and others. Black Girl Long Hair said: I just put up a post on BGLH — I want you to shout out all the up-and-coming #naturalhair brands http://bit.ly/eYkJfj […]
I love Bee mine products: http://beemineproducts.com/
I’m glad you mentioned this company. I am totally in love with the bee hold curly butter and the luscious balanced cream moisturizer.
Their deep conditioner is so luscious!
Afiya hair and body products!
http://www.afiya4you.com
You can also check out prettybrowndelta on youtube, she has a few videos of her using her product.
I’ve heard great things about Hairveda and Pura Body Natural
Blackonyx77 on youtube who sells all kinds of hair products from sheabutter mixes to jewelry at http://www.blackonyxworld.com….. I am in love with her sheayogart. Then the very new BeautifulBrwnBabyDol, also on youtube, who sells an isoke oil and is in the process of making more.
For My Sisters on Etsy. I like the nourishing conditioner. It has good slip.
Curls Curls Curls is pretty good
Curl Harmony, a brand that we have over here in the UK. The products are very natural with lots of shea butter and oils, and the smell is gorgeous.
Yes!! When I was living in the UK I LOVED this brand. It’s amazing for transitioners & naturals!
Organikah. I love the body butters especially the mango martini. Naturel Lyfe Essentials has some fab (and affordable) whipped shea.
Beautiful Curls by Alaffia has become a staple of mine. Their Curl Activating Cream for the Curl Activating line for curly to kinky hair is awesome. I use it for dry twisting and it moisturizes, elongates, and detangles my hair while adding soft hold.
I’ve been diluting dabs of the leave-in conditioner for curly to kinky hair from that same line by mixing it with equal parts vegetable glycerin and using it as a daily conditioning moisturizer on my plaits. I think it works beautifully, and I like the smell, too. It doesn’t take very much, so I anticipate that the bottle I currently have, which I just bought at the beginning of the month, will probably last me for most of the rest of the winter.
Darcy’s Botanicals hasn’t let me down yet!
I keep hearing about Karens Body Beautiful..
Belle buttersx on etsy. I love the orange dream Shea butter
Two people have already mentioned these, but I will cosign: Shea Moisture and Beautiful Curls. I get the Shea Moisture from Target and the Beautiful Curls from Whole Foods. They’re both amazing brands, and work wonders for my coarse hair texture.
Komaza Care is absolutely amazing! especially if you have thicker hair.. but they cater for all hair types
their moisturiser saved my hair from the dry season that I thought was inevitable.
Karen’s Body Beautiful!!!! love love love Butter love and sweet ambrosia….her shampoo bars are the bomb too!!!
has anyone tried the hydratherma natural line on healthyhairjourney.com?
My friend has tried HHJ, she liked it but recently swapped it for something else because it got a little to pricey for her after awhile. I heard mostly good reviews about it though.
My unknown would be Ebony of Essence I like the hair butter
I love my conditioner from Bear Fruit Hair (www.bearfruithair.com/ ) and the owner is fantastic! You can even customize your own conditioner too!
Darcy’s Botanicals (www.darcysbotanicals), I love her hair care products especially her deep conditioner, hair oil and coiling jelly. She has great customer service practices and she gives her customers free samples!
I read this so quickly, I thought you wrote “breadfruit”. I was in SHOCK! Started wondering how did I miss breadfruit’s potential use in our hair. It’s such a yummy fruit in the Caribbean!
I too enjoy Bear Fruit. I have there dessert castor oil leave in
my sorority sister has her own line out. it’s small now, but the quality is amazing. she has bath salts, body butter and soaps that leave your skin sooo soft. but she also has shampoos, poo bars, and hair butter and oil that smell yummy and work great. check her out!

Uncle Funky’s Daughter has a line of products that I like.
Does anyone know why ‘natural hair ‘ product manufacturers choose to over price their products? I know i don’t have to buy them, but i do wonder
I know what you mean Lola. I briefly looked into making my own products, and it turns out packaging is pretty expensive. Especially, if you try to use bottles that looks nice on the shelf and labels that don’t fade vs. cheap, temporary looking stuff. These small startups don’t sell a lot of units like big companies, so if they’re gonna turn any kind of profit they have to build the cost of materials into the price of each item. It’s tough all around. Even saying all that, my personal limit as a consumer is $3 per ounce. Maybe when… Read more »
lol!!!! Thanks a lot, that makes it easier to understand now.
Let us know when your products are ready
I just wanted to say (as a natural product vendor) it’s more expensive to buy quality ingredients w/ start-up funds. It’s cheaper to purchase in bulk or Vat’s rather than a few ounces or gallons. Large well-known companies can afford to sell Lotion with “shea butter”. Also, these larger companies probably only use a very small portion of raw ingredients (shea butter, coconut oil or other natural ingred’s) but the other 70 % could be sythetic fillers. You aren’t really getting a bargain.
I just started using Amazing Botanicals. I did a search for natural hair on bigcartel.com and found them. I bought the almond oil and pumpkin pomade for my locs and I like it.
I love soul chic Shea butter. This young lady has been making this Shea butter concoction for years and everybody she sells it too loves it. She been natural for almost ten years and her hair is ridiculous…..so pretty.
Is that on Etsy or her own website?
I’ll ask her for the website address and post it on here for you guys.
I haven’t tried Fleurtzy’s line yet, but the ingredients look really fab, and I have seen rave reviews.
I live in JA, so I usually can’t be bothered dealing with international shipping when I can stir and concoct myself. Maybe one day….
La Boutique de Fleurzty’s line is AMAZING!! The smell is strong for those with sensitive noses, but the conditioning properties of her line you can feel immediately and last for awhile. I was and twist my hair Sunday and leave it up until Saturday. Even with daily work-outs, the products keep my hair soft and conditioned. http://www.laboutiquedefleurzty.com/
Oh! And it’s moderately priced too.
Brown Butter Beauty and Darcy’s Botanicals are great!

I’m loving:
Shea Moisture (www.sheamoisture.com) – found at Target.
Shea Essentials (www.sheaessentials.com). They also sell on eBay and Etsy. – amazing sheas, black soaps, coconut oils, cocoa butters, etc; all raw/unprocessed unless you want it whipped. Plus you can scent your own order with a list of essential oils or other oils they offer.
No one’s mentioned Safi Hair Care (on Etsy by Alex from thegoodhairblog.com) I’ve only tried the Avocado Shea Butter (which I love) but other reviewers seems to love her other products as well.
Urban Therapy makes a product called Twisted Sista Curl Activator that is what I have been searching for for a long time. It’s a product that you can used on DRY hair (key) to do a twist out. It is non-greasy and relatively thick (reducing shrinkage). Sold at Target for $4.99 (also important).
Check out Mixed Roots I love the Curl Pudding! http://www.curlpudding.com/
Koils By Nature. The sweet almond joy hair butter is the business.
Darcy’s Botanicals
Curl Junkie (fantastic line)
Crown Pride Naturals (an irish brand, excellent products and not expensive)
Hairvéda
SincerLy-Naturale (google her, she has some lovely products)
Curl Harmony (UK)
Well some that I love that weren’t mentioned above, are Darcy’s Botanicals, and Aubreys Organics
Au’Naturale by MzSixx.

http://www.etsy.com/shop/AuNaturalebymzsixx
Darcy’s, Shea Moisture and Taliah Waajid!
@Curly C: Aubrey’s Organics isn’t what would be termed an “up-and-coming” brand. The company has been in establishment since the late 1960s. 🙂
Im at the point where I think all of these products are repetitive and too similar to try anything new. I’m sticking to the two products I have used for the last three years and staying away from the new ones. When its all said and done, I think the application and styling matter more to my hair’s outcome anyway.
@4975 You make a very good point. After all, is there really anything new under the sun when it comes to the natural hair care product lines?
She Scent It, Koils by Nature, and definitely Sunshine. Sunshine has an etsy shop and she whips up some great shea butter and they smell lovely, same with Koils by Nature.

My sister has been selling natural products for about 7 years (out of her home) she now has a storefront. Right now she just has a facebook page, she’s planning on a website in the next year. She does do mail orders. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001150394986
The Hairoine! Her hair and body products are all natural, smell wonderful, and produce great results! And it’s not just for hair, there are products for skin as well.

NATURAZ HAIR CARE LINE!!! I found out about this hair line while I was grocery shopping last week, it was created by two female chemists who have a passion for natural hair and it’s needs. When I say that these products have no harmful chemical, parabens, sulfates or alcohol in them I mean it. I use it on my 4b/4c hair and it was a treat esp since I just combing out my three year old locs. After shampooing my hair felt like velvet and not dry at all. Anyone can buy it online but it is available in various… Read more »
Kalawentz’s Black and Bossie (with Tea Tree Oil) All Natural Hair & Scalp oil is my new favorite product. The company is based in Cincinnati and as far as I know unless you live in the city you have to buy their products on-line.
I discovered Butterscotch Baby Total Body Experience on etsy.com a few years back (seller butterscotchbb. She used to be seller achancellor).I was looking for a solid shampoo and conditioner because I travel often. She has an extensive line of soaps, skin care products; I am in LOVE with the Sa-Hair-Ra Hair Shampoo Bar and Conditioning Putty. I use it as a leave in when I twist up, and a deep conditioner. It lasts me a really long time, as you break it off the bar as needed, and the smell is wonderful. I love that she uses pureed fruits and… Read more »
Sincere-Ly Naturale is a phenomenal company who uses alot of great ingredients. She uses alot of exotic ingredients in her products. The owner just started free shipping too. I just made a huge order.

I simply couldn’t leave your site prior to suggesting that I really enjoyed the usual info an individual provide for your guests? Is going to be back regularly to check out new posts
Thalia Waajid is up and coming. Not a new product, already in major discount stores and with a wide selection. But she has certain products in the line — particularly the Black Earth Curly Curl Cream — that gets mentioned by natural hair bloggers and vloggers around the world
