One week between washes is ideal for me and my daughter.

The Notorious ZAG

When my hair was longer, I washed it once every 3–4 weeks. Now that I am rocking a TWA again, I wash every 2 weeks, but every week I wet my hair and add a dollop of Organix coconut milk conditioner and let it air dry (I leave the conditioner in there until I wash it the next week). To wash it, I use a gentle shampoo I found in the dollar store (that works fantastically!!)

I have been natural for 1 year and for the first 6 months I never washed my hair but 2 times a month. I had so many people telling me and read everywhere that you shouldn’t wash your hair that often. Well my hair got mad at me and started acting up. So I increased my washes to 2 times a week and have been retaining 3/4 inch each month. I must say that the same way I took care of my hair relaxed is the same as natural and I don’t think you always have to change everything. Because once… Read more »

I wash my hair like once a week. My scalp gets feisty and irritated if I wait too long to wash. So cleansing it and getting rid of product buildup is a must for my head; i try to let no more than 2 weeks pass without a good shampoo wash.

Usually, I wash my hair every 2 weeks because I like to leave in my styles (twists or braids) for that long before I redo them due to the time it takes to style and wash my hair. If I wear my out, which isnt too often, I’d wash it once a week and deep condition bi-weekly. I’ve been natural for almost a year now, and have retained so much lenght, I’d say in these 9 months my hair has grown like 8 inches or more and I think it’s due to my protective styling and deep conditioning. I have… Read more »

I wash my hair with shampoo once a week. I do not co-wash. Washing once a week cleanses my scalp and keeps my hair hydrated. If I go more than a week without washing, my scalp gets all itchy and irritated. It’s really not a good look. Haha

I co-wash twice a week. Depending on how much product build up I shampoo with Nature’s Gate every week or every other week. I deep condition twice a month. I have eczema which leaves my scalp very dry so if I don’t at least co wash twice a week I’ll get sores that are painful and itchy.

My oldest daughter & I co~ wash nightly. My latest stint with natural has been for about 5 years & my daughter is 14 and has been natural her whole life. It just works for us as we both have healthy growing hair. My 12 year old (natural her whole life) is a club swimmer so she must wash nightly. She follows with conditioner and she also has strong healthy hair. She washes with a swimmer friendly shampoo and we all co~wash/ condition with either Hello Hydration, Suave humectant or almond & shea butter — whichever is on sale or… Read more »

I wash my hair about once a week. If I’m super busy (thanks to work) I might go as far as 2 weeks, but in general it’s once a week. I washed weekly when I was relaxed too. I don’t like my hair/scalp to get too dirty.

What vonnie said.

I also use very little in the way of leave-on/oil. That helps my scalp as well.

Speaking of scalp, I have a question. Does anyone notice an increase in dandruff from wearing a satin bonnet at night? I think my scalp sweats a lot overnight from the bonnet, but I don’t want my hair ruffed-up by the pillow. I tried a satin pillowcase but it makes me hot. Perhaps I should find another material…

I often co-wash my hair once a week but when i do protective styles like braid extensions or cornrows, it try to keep them in for at least 2 — 3 week (cornrows) so i would wash when i take them out. If I have in braid extensions…I leave in for up to 2 months and wash about once a month or more if my scalp is itchy.

I think my hair prefers less washing!

Ok, here goes, I see my hair as or like a plant and I like to wet, or rinse my hair AT THE VERY LEAST, everyday. I use shampoo about once per week. I just can’t get with this washing my hair every 2 weeks or once per week stuff. I just don’t get it. One of the main reasons that I went natural was so that I could wash my hair at will, now I can and do!!

Since I’ve cut the locks and wear my hair short, I usually shampoo every other day using a combo shampoo/conditioner…However, I use a conditioner and leave-in conditioner daily…My curly hair won’t style the way I want it to unless I condition it and use a very small amount of IC styling gel while it’s still wet. When I wore the long locks, I shampooed and conditioned my hair weekly because I like my hair and scalp to feel and smell clean…that worked for me… I recalled the ‘heated-head’ smell of a couple with dreadlocks that walked pass me in the grocery… Read more »

My scalp is demanding, so after about three days it’s time for a conditioner wash or sulfate-free shampoo. Whether I use conditioner on shampoo is dependent on the season, what I’m putting on my hair, and what I did last wash. I am lazy, so I often push it to a week, but that’s really not what my scalp thrives on.

I’ve begun to notice that if I go longer than a week without washing my hair at the root begins to mat and is terrible to detangle. I used to wash once a week, but I started to let that slide to every two weeks because I hate detangling, but I don’t think my hair likes it! I thought I was losing too much hair washing every week, but now I think every two weeks may be worse. Who knows!

I workout heavily (like sweat dripping out my fro, clothes wet) so I co-wash 3–4x per week, shampoo 1x every 7–10 days. I don’t like sweat and buildup since it dries out my hair and makes my head stink!

Sometimes I just use an Ion scalp exfoliating packet instead of shampoo. The cowashing keeps my hair pretty clean, so when I want to wash for real, I’m looking to clean my scalp more than my hair. Exfoliants work better for that.

the reason i washed my hair so infrequently when it was longer because it was DRY as i dont know what. i allowed time for my own oils to build up and take care of my hair and scalp. and lets be real: i used protective styling a lot and am busy as a wife, mother, full time student and full time employee… so those protective styles needed to stay in for as long as they could so i wouldn’t have to do much to my hair. plus the dry time was way too long with longer hair. so… the… Read more »

depends on my hair and what kind of style its in. my hair will last in coils for 3.5–4 weeks. straight, it lasts about 10 days. with 2ST, it’ll last probably a week or two. so on average, at most, probably twice monthly.

my key is: when my scalp starts to get really itchy, regardless of how fly my style is, it’s getting washed.

When i had a TWA i would wash my hair every other day, it was just so refreshing to just wash my hair, through some conditioner/oil on it EVERYDAY, run my finger through it a few times, and go…

As it got longer, and i didn’t want my hair to loc on it own, i had to start implementing a detangling session which left me only being able to wash once a week.

However, when i have twists or braids in, i tend to co-wash 2–3 times a week.

Once a week now that I have grown out of the TWA stage. Keeps the scalp clean, which has been a factor in controlling my flake issue. It also prevents my hair from getting too tangled so I don’t get fatigued/frustrated while dealing with it. Plus, my hair needs that weekly TLC when it’s being bombarded by the sun on a daily basis.

I SHOULD wash my hair once a week, however, sometimes I go every 2 weeks. Most of the time my hair is in 2strand twists. On top of that, I run 5x a week. So my hair gets dirty and matted rather quickly. So, If I’m lazy and wait 2 weeks, my hair is a hot mess when I try to wash and detangle it. So, I need to get on a once a week schedule to save myself time and effort!

It depends on the season. Since it’s winter, I shampoo, deep condition, and do a hot oil treatment on Thursday or Friday nights followed by a good leave in conditioner and a twist set. I shampoo my hair every other day and rinse my hair with honey on in between days. Sorry but not washing your hair at least once in three days with shampoo is nasty. Why bother to have a clean body if you are going to walk around with stank hair? At least rinse your hair on the days you don’t shampoo.
