Are you friggin’ serious!?! I dealt with burns and scrabs from doing a perm.…so wearing a gas mask at a salon just to get straight hair and pay lots of money would be worth it.……Uh…I don’t think so!

Maybe I am wrong but are there not safer products in your local drugstore that can help you maintain straight hair for a period of time with a good ole fashion flat iron? I used to swear by John Frieda products in between relaxers and they worked great for me.

Is this technique so great that it is worth the cost to ones wallet and health when there are other ways to get hair straight?

If that’s what they want so be it but something about this product does not feel right to me.

THIS IS TERRIFYING! I originally thought it was an artistic picture accompanying perhaps a satirical article based on the dangers of certain beauty practices. Like a “Beauty Kills” or “Dying to be Beautiful” article. In relation to how far women will go to be considered “attractive.” Wow- how mortifying..

I saw this on Good Morning American this morning and I feel that if you have to use a gasmask to have a product put in your hair to me that is a sure sign that this product isn’t very safe at all for your health as well as your hair.…I truly don’t see myself getting a Brazilian blow-out…

lol, and the clients STILL went through with it ? It’s ridiculous what people will do for straight hair, perms still being #1.

All in the pursuit of supposed “beauty”.
Thank God I’m natural reason # 282828272781959!

This picture is indeed absurd but, recalling my permed days so is:
1. Waking up at 7 on a Saturday morning just to sit in a hair salon for most of the day
2. Enduring burns and general scalp irritation for extra straight hair
3. Not going out in inclement weather because of your hair
4. Spending more, in a month, on hair and all of its woes than some people do for their car payments (seriously!)

I could go on…

If you have to do all that then it is a clear indication that the treatment is not for you or safe…smh

This is some bull!!! I saw this today on Good Moring America.!! It has formaldahyde in it!!! It burns your eyes and now folks r using respirators!!! really..We need to love ourselves a more and not go and literally kill ourselves to be “beautiful”.!!

Well its usually just Keratin, there are treatments out there without the formaldahyde. Keratin is good for you thats why they use it to keep your hair beautiful like this…

I just posted this via twitter yesterday astonished at this woman in a gas mask..wake up people..gas masks are for going into areas where there’s…wait for it…poisonous gases in the freakin’ air!!

LOL! Your statement is so true. I recently decided to go natural and cut off my permed hair. I’ve been perming since the age of 15 and am now in my early 50’s (what does that tell you). I finally realized that menopause and hair chems don’t jive too well. So, I’m done. Reading this article and seeing this picture only confirms that I made the right choice.

P.S. I loved your …wait for it…:)

What the hell? Gas masks!! If you have to wear a gas mask in order to straighten your hair then it is not worth it. When you have to wear a gas mask in order to “safely” apply the product in the client’s hair then you should not be offering such services. This is truly, utterly sick. WAKE UP!!!

I’d rather get a hot comb pulled through my hair, rather than wear a respirator! All of that for beauty?!

I wonder has anyone done any testing to see if this stuff causes cancer or any other terminal illness. Let’s see what they say 5, 10 years from now.

I read this yesterday and I was thinking, they let this crap sit on their hair for 48 hours after needing to wear a gas mask while it was a applied?

Then someone brought up the environment in the comments on the article. That is crazy that we’ll continue to crap on our only home for a few weeks (that was a mess to me too–it’s not even permanent) of straighter hair.

So I read the article and peeked at the comment section and what does the first comment say?

As the unhappy owner of a mop of frizzy hair, the keratin treatment has been a godsend. I would drink the stuff if necessary.”

And another comment from a fellow lawyer: “Straightened hair is easier to care for and control and, in my profession, I need to be neat and well-groomed.”

DAAAYUM! SMH. Thank God I was able to finally resist years of brainwashing to embrace my natural hair.

I wonder if those lawyers commenting on the article will be bringing suits when their hair falls out from the BKT. Give it ten years and this unchartered water of the cosmetic industry may end in the courtroom for many people.

It’s not paying to be beautiful, it’s attaining straight hair at all costs even your health. Too many square pegs are crumbling under the pressure to fit the round hole. Not I.

I found it kind of comical and scary all at the same time, but I was happy to see that the people weren’t black. Its not just us put crap in their hair in the name of beauty. All races have issues with their natural hair. My friend heather (White girl) wanted curly hair SO BAD that she sweet talked a relative to take her to get a perm ( she was 10 years old). Natural straight haired girl wanting curly and put chemical in her hair to get it that way. Girls being born brunettes putting chemicals in their… Read more »

I will start off by saying that the title of this piece was a little misleading. The procedure that is being done is the Keratin treatment. I thought that it was about the regular blowout. I’ve had 2 regular blowouts and they are awesome. I was considering getting the Keratin treatment because I can’t go to a job interview with my hair the way it is. The jobs that I am looking for are in corporate America and the company that I came from did not have many women with natural hair. Braids maybe but women who had braids worked… Read more »

Shell Well that is some keratin treatment cause I have had one and it was not that at all. You can’t prove that its just their hair that is keeping them from advancing. There could be so much more, education, do they speak another language, are they on time? I work in a professional setting too and a blow dryer and a flat iron will do just fine to straighten your hair. I would say it would be better to just learn how to do your hair. It saves you money and its rewarding when your hair and you are… Read more »
