Indigo Charlie // Natural Hair Style Icon

Avatar • Oct 6, 2010

Indigo Charlie is an up and coming singer/songwriter and personal assistant to the fabulous Solange Knowles. She sat down with BGLH to talk life and hair!

Where are you from?
I:
I was born and raised mostly in SoCal California. I spent 6 years living in New York but returned to Newport Beach in 2006 in time to spend my final high school years at Corona Del Mar.

I’m a student at the Fashion Design Institute of Design & Merchandising mastering in Visual Communications. I would love to work for a designer in PR, Fashion Coordinating or ULTIMATELY be their trend spotter. Oh yeah, that’s the most delicious of all!!! I’m also a singer/songwriter.

So, the question on everybody’s mind; How do you get a gig as an assistant to Solange Knowles?!
I:
I am really blessed and really lucky, I am in love with my job and have an amazing boss. My mom used to be her publicist and I spent a lot of time interning in PR during her last project and we built a rapport and friendship. This past year she approached me with this amazing opportunity and I happily accepted. She’s an amazing mother, artist and boss.

How do you juggle your job assisting Solange, and managing your own busy life (music career, fashion school, etc)
I:
I don’t waste ANY time! I took the summer off from school which was amazing because I got to spend a lot of time working on the road with my boss which was a beautiful and life changing experience. When I’m in school, I spend most of my time in class and working on homework and projects and the rest working. I am constantly on my blackberry during school breaks throughout the day. I have managed to squeeze in recording and photo shoots for my own project in the little free time I have. I spend every moment of every day doing something I love in one aspect of my life or another, so I am happy with it ALL.

Why did you decide to get into music? What do you bring that you think the industry is lacking right now?
I:
I have always been in love with music. It feels like a dream sometimes, and I am just beginning this journey. I wanted to be a singer forever, but my mom was very firm on school, college, career…she’s worked in the music industry for over 16 years and always warned me about how rough it could be. She also wanted me to be mature and know who I was before delving into making music. Things really just began falling into place for me over the past year. It’s all been a blessing, truly. I am in love with the journey, the process, the creative people I am surrounded by…it’s yummy. I think what I bring to the music is just me.…I hope people will connect with what I am giving them because it’s truly a piece of my soul. I have always been a very private person but in my songs, I tell my secrets.

Why did you decide to go natural?
I:
Honestly, I go back and forth between weave and natural. I’ve wore a weave for about a year while I was growing out a texturizer gone wrong. It’s was convenient and easy but I love the way my natural hair feels. I’ve been without a weave for almost a year and a half. It takes a bit more care but I love it. I’m not saying I’d never put one in again, but not for now. I also lost my dear friend and hairdresser, Stephon O’Neal, who did all of my weaves and took such great care of my hair. I can’t imagine that process without him.

What’s your regimen?
I:
I wash my hair once a week with Pureology shampoo and conditioner, then I douse it with Mixed-Chicks leave in conditioner which is the best everrrrrrrrrr. I roller set my hair and sleep in the curlers, pick them out in the morning and let it go wild! I sleep in a scarf EVERY night without fail and do some touch up with a curling iron until I do it all over again the next week, lol. I use heat protector before the curling iron though, absolutely.

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
I:
The biggest mistakes I ever made was getting highlights! They all broke off month by month, ugh. My mom warned me, but I just had to have them. That was in 8th grade, never again! Young and silly!!!

What’s the best thing that you do for your hair?
I:
Put in Mixed-Chicks every time I wash it! Other than that, using a heat protector any time I have to use the curling iron is really important for me too.

What sites do you troll for style/beauty information?
I:
I am always looking for new hot photo/fashion blogs! But these are the sites I go to often:
2bitchezdeep.com
CocoPerez.com
TheStyleRookie.com
TheLipstickDiaries.com
Lookbook.nu
Style.com
.…gosh, there are a lot…I think my list might go 20–30 deep 🙂

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
I:
You can find me on twitter.com/IndigoC

Thanks Indigo! Be sure to check out her music channel HERE.
