How much length do you retain every month?

Avatar • Sep 27, 2010

Today’s question: How much length does your hair retain every month? Are you happy with that amount? And if your hair isn’t retaining like you want it to, what do you attribute it to (too much manipulation, breakage from low moisture, stress, etc)? Please share!

I keep my hair in protective styles pretty much 24/7 with the exception being weekends and days when I want a change. I seem to retain most of my length hardly ever have berakage. The only way I really notice is retention/growth is when I straighten or blow dry my hair (which is rare- i.e. once every 3–4 months)

I have no idea. I have major shrinkage and I rarely fully stretch my hair.

I have began retaining length since I stopped doing wash and goes. I am on my protective styling kick and my ends look great! I blow it out once a year, so in Dec. I’ll know for sure.

My hair is in protective styles about 90–95% of the time so I retain about 1/2 inch each month…sometimes a little more.

I’m a hairy girl, lol!! I usually do regular plait-outs and re-braid nightly (6–9 plaits). Other than that I don’t do too much to my hair. I would say that my hair grows a little over 1/2 a month b/c I have to do my regular facial wax weekly!!! The positive and negatives of having fast-growing hair 🙂

Ever since I have cut down on heat I have retained a significant amount of growth. I can only tell when I flat iron/blow dry, which is not often once every 3 months or so. I am very happy with my growth retention I think i have retained about 2- 3 inches. My hair is full and beautiful. Im loving it!

I wear protective styles the majority of the time, too. I’ve noticed about a 1/2inch or less retained each month.

I trimmed my hair yesterday for the first time in well over 6 months. I do it myself because I take off exactly what needs to be taken off. I only had to snip about 1/8 inch of hair (maybe even a little less). Protective styling is certaily the way to go.

I haven’t measured my length in awhile, but it’s definitely growing. I don’t use heat, and I keep my hair in protective styles most of the time, as well as keeping my hair moisturized and wearing a silk bonnet at night.

No idea! I colored my hair at the beginning of summer, and I think I had a couple inches of growth before I colored it again a couple weeks ago. I mainly do wash and go’s and lots of shrinkage goes on, but my length retention is very noticeable when I wash my hair. If I measured monthly I might drive myself mad.

I retain little over 1/2 inch per month mainly because of keeping ends moisturized even if not tucked under and because of this homemade treatment im doing

Well my hair is not really growing all that much. I think that it is because I dont do protective styles. I hate them

I retain 1/2 inch every month. My hair is in protective styling 90% of the time. I keep it moisturized by spritzing daily and wash it weekly (sometimes bi-weekly).

I don’t know. I’m transitioning with a lot of shrinkage as I hadn’t used heat since May. At my last relaxer, I was beyond shoulder-length. Since that was near five months ago, I would assume that I’m bra-strap length now.

I feel like I’m not retaining any length at all. I BCed only about a month and a half ago, so I’m still trying to figure out what’ll work for my hair. I don’t really measure it or anything like that.

I have no idea. I don’t measure my hair on a monthly basis. However, I’m happy that I am able to retain some of my growth. I do notice on occasion that my hair is hanging lower than it used to when wet. My hair is longer now than it’s ever been in my recollection.

i would say between a 1/4inch and a 1/2 inch a month…soo probably like a 1/3rd of an inch a month. I wear protective styles like 75% of the time.
I have 4b/4c hair which its a biiittt harder to grow. but i love it…its gorgeous. I used to not do protective styles, and i swear my growth was like only 1/8th inch per month! Now its much faster!! NO SPLITS!!

A Simple Thing

Normally it’s around 1 inch a month, though it took me an age and a half to realise that I have fine hair, and it needs regular protein, or it breaks off.
So I’d say I’d lost most of my length to breakage, caused by lack of protein and too much manipulation.

Im actually not sure if Im retaining length…my boyfriend says my curly fro is loooking much bigger and fuller than before…this could be due to the castor oil or the fact that im seperating my braids more when unraveling…I beem wearing my out and maintaining my fro by putting my hair in about 6 braids at night..i just started protective styling during the week to see how much it grows…im gonna trim in Dec so I’ll get to see how much its grown in the past 9 months…I plan to start protective styling during the week in January on a… Read more »

I guess I am retaining more length now that I have stopped using direct heat often and when I do, it’s minimal. There is less breakage because of this and also since the hair is better moisturised. However, even though most of us want more length, I feel that these very precise length checks can cause a lot of angst especially when you notice you have not reached your desired length. For me what is satisfying is my new found creativity when it comes to styling, a healthy hairline and ends that are not constantly breaking. If these are okay,… Read more »

Hi Sue,

couldn’t have said it better myself, why does length have to be the ultimate goal i thought it was healthier hair and a stronger sense of self. my grandmother always said a watched pot never boils

After accounting for my regular dustings, my hair grows about 3/5 inch per month. I do wet twists every two to three nights, sleep with a bonnet (of course), deep condition weekly and use the oil trifecta: sweet almond, avocado and coconut. I can’t wait until it’s shoulder length. Woop woop! That’s my goal for now. 🙂

I suck at math lol.

I keep my hair in protective styles 99% of the time and my hair has grown by leaps and bounds in the two years that I’ve been completely natural. I don’t really know the full length of my hair since my hair is rarely out and I deal with extreme shrinkage(4a/b), I go by “hangtime” of my twists and braids.

How much length do I retain each month? Well, now that I’m deliberately wearing my hair short, TOO MUCH! lol I trim once a month, but I really should trim every 3 weeks. The only time I comb with a comb is on trim day…the rest of the time it’s fingers only. I have one style — the wash (or co-wash, or rinse, or spritz) and go. I use as few products as I can get away with. I estimate I’m retaining AT LEAST a half-inch a month…sure wish I could be this hands-off with longer hair but alas…it would be… Read more »

I am 4b/c and I do not feel as though my hair is growing as much as it did during my first two years as a natural. I wear protective styles 95 percent of the time. Although its protected in that sense, I am constantly getting split ends, knots and my hair is pretty dry. Side note, need to find a good moisturizer. I think the reason that I am not retaining length is because my hair might be in telogen (resting) phase. Hopefully that is the case, and my hair will start growing again.

I should get the average growth or little bit more.
I stay protective styling.
I also take biotin, a B‑Complex Vitamin and a multi ‑vitamin
everyday, while working out several times a week. This also helps.

For the first year or so, I’m not sure what the rate was but it was less that .5 in/month. For the last year or so I’ve been getting .5 in/month. I do mostly braidouts where my hair is touching my shirt and blowing in the wind and everything else that’s a protective style no-no.

I cant tell either. I just BCd in mid July (after nearly 8 mnths of transitioning) and I dont have enough hair to really stretch. I get tons of shrinkage at night but it seems like my hair is getting bigger.

Calidiamond

When I was using heat I would retain .25 of the .5 inches I would gain in one month. Now that I am transitioning (7 months post) and hardly ever use heat I retain my .5 in. It feels really good. BTW, I wear my hair in a braid out 2–3 times a week. The rest of the time I am in deeply moisturized braids under a wig.

No idea because I haven’t checked. I find that having a routine, moisturizing regularly, adjusting your product arsenal to fit the weather and protecting my hair at night have allowed me hair to flourish in the last couple of months (that’s how long I’ve been making a real effort :)).

My hair is growing, but very slowly, and then it breaks off. The thing is,my hair is thin,so I don’t like to wear my protective styles out, especially since I started back working. I like twist outs, but because my hair is thin, plain twists don’t look good on me and I have to re-do them every night, which is veeerrry annoying. My twist outs used to look really good when I let my twists stay up for a few days first. Hopefully,I’m gonna get some braids or a sew-in soon so I can take a break from doing my hair and maybe it’ll grow faster.… Read more »

I retain about 0.4″/month including tri-monthly dustings. Some sections of my hair grow faster than others depending on how the wind blows, but the 0.4″ is a good average number.

I try not to measure my hair growth on a monthly basis b/c it’s much harder to tell, think about it 0.4″ is not a lot, but 2.4″ — that’s A LOT! I do length checks bi-annually via stretching.

I don’t really know I wear my hair in the kinky curly wash go. my hair gets very thick before it grows,it so weird. so hard for me to detangle. I try look to see if it grows but always same length for about two months now. just really thick. say about every 3 to 4 months my hair grows. no one in my family has long hair not even past there shoulders. my monther never had long hair,so I try not to be length crazy.

I hear you there! For me it’s the same. On the one hand i want my hair to reach my bra strap, ideally by next summer. but on the other, even now when i wash my hair it’s irritating how it hangs down into the drain in the sink or tub, because it’s so long. it doesn’t seem long to me until it’s in my way, at which point my husband is like “baby, are you sure you want longer hair? you already have enough as it is!” and that’s something when a BLACK MAN says that- since they tend… Read more »

Dawn

Reply to  Angelica

styles with low manipulation- you put it into the style and don’t have to touch your hair again for at least the rest of the day until at most another couple of months; and/or styles that keep your ends shielded from friction (in the form of the elements, your clothing, your own fingers, etc.)
examples include: buns, french braid updos, locs, braids, twists, etc.

i would say 1/2 monthly, i am huge on hair care so I make sure i protect those end whether in PS or not i do my best to treat those ends with tlc so i have less trimming to do when the time comes, i have been natural for 1 year and have yet to trim i honestly do seee the need to since my ends are so healthy, “if it aint broke dont fix it” i have a goal to achieve and thatS TO GROW WL hair stretched by aug of 2013 so it is important that i… Read more »

@ angelica Protective styles or PS is any style that allows your hair to be tucked away and protected; braids extensions, sew in weaves, buns, cornrows..the list goes on and on. When hair is in PS it just grows and the fact that PS requires little or no manipulation the hair can rest from excessive touching which can lead to split ends. hope this helps

Hey khe, Most likely your hair is growing (unless you have health issues, scalp issues, malnurishment, or on some meds that causes stunted hair growth). The problem with most ppl, is that they cant retain hair growth, and get alot of breakage, etc. You prob should reevaluate your protective styling. For me, I can’t do small twists because my hair gets all tangled when I take them out, and I get lots of breakage (not protective at all), and I also can’t keep a style for more than 1 wk, my hair grows about 2/3 to 1″ per month, so… Read more »

I haven’t had a perm in nearly a year & I’ve been keeping my ends trimmed. I wash, condition, blow dry and press my hair weekly. I also moisturize it daily. I’m really ready to try the kinky/curly natural look toward my journey of healthy natural hair. How do I gain this look, and which products are the best?

I B/C’d December 2010. I cut off all my hair to a low fade. It’s now June 2011 and my hair is about 4–5 inches long. I wear wash n go’s. I wash on Sunday night and condition and use Shea Moisture creme and Olive oil. I use a satin cap at night and just refresh every morning with water and Shea Moisture again. I only wash once a week and it helps to retain length. I just had my first dusting one week ago and my hair curls better and I see progress. I am a 4a/4b hair type… Read more »
