Jill Scott rocks a new look

Avatar • Aug 18, 2010

Jill Scott is pictured on the left at her high school reunion with a straightened ‘do. On the left is Jill in years past, sporting a natural look. (via Necole Bitchie)

So when I posted recently about Erykah Badu rocking a straight, blonde, mo-hawk I was pretty apathetic because, aside from some gorgeous short cuts, she’s hasn’t really rocked natural hair (natural wigs, yes. natural hair, no.) But I have to say, seeing Jill Scott, who is known for her gorgeous, healthy curls, rocking this look is… I dunno… kind of sad to me.

And it won’t make me appreciate her any less. But I’m really missing the gorgeous volume. What’s your take?

Hopefully its just a hard press. I’ve had my hair pressed so well before that a lot of people thought my hair was permed. I sincerely hope that her hair isn’t permed. I’m gonna be honest, every time a natural goes to perms my heart breaks and a puppy dies.

Honestly I think people are making a big deal outta nothing. We put way too much emphasis on these celebrities and their appearances. I swear its like no one wants an artist to change or try something different. Like I always say if you like it I love it though that may be cliche but its the truth. These women/men have one life to live just like you and I. If they wanna change their look so be it, whether its natural or not, hair is about expression and if you dont like it you can shave it off and… Read more »

She looks okay with it, but I still don’t like it. I appreciated her hair with super volume, bouncy curl, lush coils! Now it’s like every other head of hair out there in the straight market…no likey.

I don’t really care if it is relaxed or not, live and let live. It doesn’t suit her face.

I’m indifferent. It’s great to see prominent women rocking natural hair but if jill relaxed her hair then that’s her business. Maybe if my choice to go/stay natural was inspired by her I’d feel different.

LMBO @ MissyD “and a puppy dies”…I’ll be honest, as much as I say to each his own and I don’t knock anyone for what they want to do with THEIR hair…I get a little disappointed whenever a natty girl goes permie…I feel like we lost one of our crew. Of course it doesn’t change the way we feel about the person but…just a slight disappointment.

It does look like it could be a press. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. 🙂 I definitely enjoy the natural hair, but I also feel that it really is each individual’s decision about what they choose to do or not do to their own locs. People are constantly changing and no one should feel like they’re letting one group down if they transition to or back to another. It’s a personal choice.

I have been natural since 1991 with the exception of an 8 month period in 2005. I relaxed my hair because I wanted a new look. it wasn’t a big deal. I knew who I was and didn’t need to stay natural to define me. I think Jill and Erykah have the right to be themselves without us getting depressed.

Choice. Change. It’s all good. Sometimes a new style is just that, not a political statement or manifesto.

I’m confused…Jill was on The Mo’Nique Show 2 nights ago and was rocking a medium sized natural with her natural hair color. I’m sure it was recent, she was talking about her new up-coming projects and her son. I think your picture may be older?

I like it. Perhaps she flat-ironed her hair. Just because it’s straight, doesn’t mean it’s not natural. If it doesn’t have chemicals, it’s natural. I love Jill’s versatility. We have to be accepting of ALL our hairstyles, regardless of texture. Like us, Jill likes to switch it up every now and then.

Personally, I don’t know her hair story. Anything could of happened. She could of had major breakage OR, maybe…just maybe…she felt like rocking it straight for a little while. Yes, I most definitely prefer her with big, bodacious hair, but at the end of the day she shouldn’t be condemned for deciding what to do whet HER hair.

I don’t like the new do (how could straight hair hold a candle to natural hair on any black woman, really)…but I agree that hair is just hair and everyone is entitled to their own space of expression. Unfortunately, with regard to black people, we are many generations from that utopia precisely because our natural hair is not the norm. Until then, hair will always conjure up complicated feelings, natural or otherwise.

serenissima

Yeah, I think it’s a little excessive to be ‘sad’ and ‘disappointed’ about this, especially when we have people constantly championing Michelle O’s straight-as-pin blowout as ‘natural.’

The styles, in all honesty, don’t even look that different to me, and until there’s proof she relaxed I say it’s no big deal. Straight is just a style and everybody’s grown.

Style icons on this site rock blowouts all the time, as well as knot- and twistouts to get curl definition… Same thing. A style.

@ Lisa, That episode of the Monique show is old I first saw it months ago.

But I don’t think it flatters her face either, but I’m not bummed about it. Sometimes we all want to change our styles up so I don’t fault her for it. And I don’t even think she’s relaxed it so she can still rock it curly, tho she’ll prob have to cut it evenly.

But I don’t think that every time a natural celeb chooses to rock a straight look that it should be an Earth shattering event, it’s just hair.

I like the reddish brown color and hairstyle. However, if she has decided to straighten her hair it’s no big deal. She has the right to do whatever she wants. This is making a mountain out of a molehill.

So, I actually saw the full pic a couple of days ago b/c my cuz is standing next to her and I didn’t even recognize Jill!!! lol Honestly, my heart dropped a tad b/c I do associate her w/ natural hair, but at the end of the day, she’s still gorgeous, fabulous and talented! AKA I got over it real quick!

I think one thing us naturals love about our hair is change and versatility…and once you’ve taken “the plunge/journey” to be natural, it’s easy to take it again and again.

So I will be the minority voice here. Jill Scott is my natural hair idol. I love her styles, her color and her swagger. So I’m unable to accept her perming her hair. I can not and I will not. This has to be a early April’s fool joke. Perm hair acceptance my butt. She shoud be natural and stay natural because it is her look. Bump perm acceptance. That is like accepting people who smoke. If something isnt’ healthy for you then it isn’t health you. We need to stop the bs. Cause would we still get perms if… Read more »

Dear Kinky Curly Girl aka Black Militant Natural, Simma down! Who said anything about a perm? We only have a picture! Does being a “militant” natural mean not understanding the diversity of natural hairstyles? Our hair can be kinky and coily, but hey if we want a straight style we can do that too. And girl please don’t try to convince your friends that accepting permed hair is like accepting smoking. At that rate we can say accepting permed hair is like accepting eating junk food which is also rather unhealthy and can lead to obesity and diabetes, but wouldn’t that… Read more »

The only reason I even have feelings towards Jill’s straight style is because she did that Essence article about how painful it is to see interracial couples. I feel like with loving your ethnicity so much, you should accept the natural state of your hair. Just some contradictions for me.

It does look like some weavage is going on if the pictures are both recent. She can’t press the right photo and get the left photo.
It’s whatever, Jill. After that comment in Essence, I couldn’t really fly with you anyways…

That is just an all around bad picture. Looks like someone at the reunion snapped it on a cell phone or something, can’t really judge. If she’s mixing things up, cool. I just hope it isn’t a relaxer.

I have been a fan of Jill Scott for a long time but I am not a fan of this look. I’m sorry, it does her no justice. I think looks like the ones Felicia Leatherwood did really showcase her natural beauty. I’m still a fan of her music and work though, I would never discount someone’s craft just because they tried something different with their look. I know we’ve all experimented with not-so-flattering hairstyles only to eventually find something else that works for us. So more power to Jill. I’ll just say that I appreciate her other hairstyles better.

This post, like the post about Erykah Badu creates the impression that Jill has relaxed her hair (I think the comments are evidence of that) when the reality is that we have NO clue about whether or not her hair is chemically treated. I’m not a really a Jill Scott fan, but I do remember her rocking a really funky hair cut in the late 90s with the back shaved and all that. She hasn’t always sported a bodacious fro. She’s had shorter, asymmetrical cuts as well. Also, I disagree that the cut is “common-looking.” I actually think it’s pretty… Read more »

I could never deny Jill’s right to express herself in a myriad of ways, however, I simply feel that the straight look fails in her a particular manner. I think that when some commenters express that it is “common looking” they are indicating that straight hair is not only underwhelming but tends to lend it’s wearer a look of “cultural poverty.” I express that out of full love for my women, all of us, straight or permed. Something about straight hair indicates a lack of a certain type of consciousness that I would like to see in our women. It… Read more »

Yes, that pretty much sums it up. I can’t say that there are any singers that I’m invested emotionally in. I’m not a fan, so I don’t feel shocked; however, I am disappointed. Straight hair among AA women is drastically overrepresented. America doesn’t understand that African features are beautiful too–it doesn’t even see Afro features as acceptable. So when a natural steps down from the effort to celebrate our natural features, it is disappointing.

Everyone always talks about Miss Scott’s weight. I saw her on stage in Oakland and she looked great. No she didn’t weight 110 lbs, but I wonder how many of you (men and women) weigh 110 lbs and wear a size 2, probably not many of you. And if you think starving yourself will make you any healthier, you will be in for the big surprise. It is time for people to worry about themselves and let Miss Scott take care of herself, she obviously is pretty good at doing this!

Her hair is irrevelant, it’s not for us to like or approve of, nor does it define her. Her music does, is still on point, and she puts on one heck of a concert and that’s all that matters to me.

I don’t like the straight look but thats only because there’s really no style with it lol. It looks like someone just blow dried it and said ‘the end’ lol. But no one’s hair style would ever make me sad. When I first went natural I scorned black girls with perms. I wanted them all to be natural like me. But now I’ve calmed down and realized it’s a style choice. If it looks good then good for them. It’s their choice.

I’ve loved Jill Scott since the release of her first album; but it wasn’t just her voice that had me drawn to her. It was her confidence, and her acceptance of herself in her natural state. Now, I don’t know what made her decide to perm and cut her hair. And to be honest, it’s none of my business; but as a natural woman, I have to say that I’m not feeling it. And I know she wouldn’t care what I, nor anyone else thinks, but I hope she goes back to sporting the ‘napptural’ fro that I personally love… Read more »

sooooooooo.…ae we sure its relaxed and not just straightened? And if it were relaxed does that take away from who she is because of it? I do believe its possible to love yourself and still put some relaxer in your hair. Sometimes the natural community turns non-natural people off because of our strong opinion on those that make the decision not to be natural. Jill is a beautiful soul that makes beautiful music. That should be all that matters even on a natural hair site.

Each person rocks their hair based on how their mood is. I love my hair natural but at the same time I have love for those who like straight styles too. As a make up artist, trends and fashion are imperative to my success. If long straight hair is “in for the moment, bring on the Cher inspired wigs. The only time I protest is when a woman styles her hair based on a complex, or broken slave mentality. Love yourselves with or without hair 🙂

Unfortunately, changing her hair does have an impact, but only on her. Realistically, hair does make a difference and though it should not, we are judged by it. For AA women, it has been a psychological rites of passage to go natural so that we can reCLAIM who we are as women. Being beautiful and wearing our natural hair gives us an opporunity to own who we are as opposed to the onslaught of push back NOT to be ourselves. To add injury to insult, we are subliminally told everyday that we should get rid of the “frizz”, but commercials… Read more »
