Today’s roll call is all about deep conditioning. It’s important to fortify the hair after days/weeks/months of manipulation, but how people go about it is very different.
So I have three questions;
-
1. How often do you deep condition?
2. What product(s) do you use?
3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein?
I deep condition about once a week or every two weeks. It depends on how often I wash my hair. I used to swear by Elasta QPs DPR-11, but I cheated on it and accidentally fell in love with Palmer’s Coconut Deep Conditioner. LOL! It was cheap and my mom said she really liked it, so I figured I’d give it a try, but my hair LOVED it!! Now I don’t use any other deep conditioner.
When I deep-condition, I’m trying to really moisturize my hair and make it stronger to prevent breakage. So far, so good.
I use Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner once a week to deep condition. My goal is simply to moisturize because my hair sucks up moisture like a sponge. i’m not really concerned with building protein right now; I’m trying to get my moisture game on lock because I’ve been guilty in the past of neglecting my hair in that department.
Especially now that i’m fully natural (bc’ed two weeks ago after transitioning for a year. YAY me! )I want to make sure that I’m really pampering my hair. 🙂
We try to deep condition once a week with Organics by Africa’s Best Olive Oil Deep Conditioning Treatment. We want to achieve strength moisture and length.
I try to deep condition once a week, or at least every time I shampoo. I don’t have a set DC product yet, but I have Mane N Tail, Shea Moisture, and a masque I bought from Butters and Bars. I DC to strengthen my hair.
I have a TWA, and I DC twice per week (steam and then baggy overnight) with either Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose or Matrix Biolage Hydrating Balm. I do a protein treatment every other week with either Aubrey Organics Glycogen Protein Conditioner or a mixture of egg yolk, vanilla yogurt, coconut oil and honey.
1. How often do you deep condition?
I try to deep condition with a moisturizing conditioner once a week and a protein once a month. However, this doesn’t always happen.
2. What product(s) do you use?
Lately I’ve been testing Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle mixed with castor or coconut oil. So far so good!
3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein?
Deep condition to keep my hair moisturized, especially in winter. My hair needs all the moisture it can get!
1. How often do you deep condition? The goal is once a week
2. What product(s) do you use? Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Mask or Elasta QP DPR-11. I may or may not add olive oil and honey to either and I either sit under my hair steamer for 30 minutes or sleep overnight with a plastic cap.
3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein? My ultimate goal is moisture.
I don’t DC often enough. I try to do it every time I shampoo my hair which is only once or twice a month. I know I need to step my game up. When I DC I use either Jessicurl Weekly DC or Lustrasilk Olive Oil and Egg DC. I try to alternate between protein and moisture since I have been known submit my hair to hydral fatigue.
I try to not go longer than 2 weeks without doing a deep condition. I usually use ORS Replen. Pack, but I soon will try Shea Moisture’s product because it’s more natural. My hair tends to require lots of moisturizing. However, after my BC in May it seemed like my hair really started needing the moisture. I do it in effort to maintain a state of health. I don’t want to go back to Hair ICU, lol.
I deep condition often, once a week or every 10 days or so….I like to pamper my hair 😀
Generally I use a really creamy conditioner like aubrey organics gpb or honeysuckle rose, olive oil, and coconut oil, maybe honey.
when I want protein, I’ll use hair mayonnaise.

I try to DC once a week. I use LeKair Cholesterol Plus with a plastic cap and let it sit for 30-40 minutes. Wash it out with cool water. It makes my hair extremely soft. I want to try a new DC though.
I deep condition once a week with either ORS replenishing conditioner or olive oil & honey.
I accomplish softer more moisturized hair.
Once a week with the Placenta w/ Henna and Olive Oil pack or if my hair has had a really rough week I use Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner. The goal is to get my hair well moisturized.
1. I deep condition every two weeks. I don’t use a hairdryer or a heating cap so I keep it in for about 2 hours. While waiting I do chores, watch t.v., exercise or run errands. 2. The products I use are Dove Intense Damage Therapy (the best conditioner I’ve ever had. :)) and coat it with Salon Care Cholesterol. My hair turns out sooo unbelievably soft. And Oh, I also make sure to rinse with cold water so that the moisture isn’t stripped. 3. I DC for the moisture, I’ve noticed that it has changed the strength of my… Read more »
i usually DC twice a monthly.
i go to a stylist monthly,
and get steamed,
then i usually DC overnight after i shampoo my hair.
i used to use giovanni’s deeper moisture & bag it,
but recently i’m using trader joe’s nourish spa conditioner
with coconut & tea tree oil,
& my hair has fallen in love.
i DC for added moisture and strength
& to alleviate my dry, itchy scalp issue.
I deep condition my hair over night with Ojon Revitalizing Hair Treatment every one to two weeks, this product is rather pricey, but i’ve had the jar for almost 2 years!! I Love it!!!!!
If I’m lazy I’ll DC with Queen Helene Cholesterol Conditioner,my mom used this on my hair even as a child!! oldie but goodie.
My hair stays thirsty so i DC for moisture as well as preventing breakage.
I deep condition every week. The main purpose is to give my hair moisture-I’ve found this is the best way. I use a variety of products. My favorites are usually a heavy cholesterol conditioner (such as the one by Hollywood Beaty) or the Organic Root Stimulator Replenish Pacs.
Wow, just read through the answers and it seems that ORS Replenishing conditioner is a hit!
I DC at least once a week. However I’ve been doing it every three days b/c I’m working out more and I DC everytime I co-wash.
I’ve recently started using Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Conditioner. LOVE IT! Most use Hello Hydration but TT is so slept on!
My ultimate goal is to aid in length retention through moisture (and protective styles).

2. What product(s) do you use? I use Elasta QP-DPR 11 mixed with Castor Oil
3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein? Increased strength, curl definition, and to combat dryness.

Increase strength, moisture, decreased porosity, softness, smoothness.
oooooo I LOVE TO DC! I do it every week (once)
I usually use Cholesterol (the one with Aloe Vera Gel) and avocado and mayo. Ive recently tried Shea Moisture Masque.
I DC for moisture of course, and elasticity..the avocado really puts the spring back in my curls ;o)
1. How often do you deep condition? Once a week
2. What product(s) do you use? Depends on what I have at the moment.
3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein? Moisture and strength
i agree Stacey… i love TT and don’t understand the preference of HH over TT. i dunno about using it as a DC though.
I’ve recently started deep condition once a week, I don’t have a product I use all the time yet, but I’ve recently started ‘yes to cucumbers’ .
1) I DC every time I wash my hair (as a norm, once a week).
2) I like to use either Jessicurl’s Too Shea moisturizing conditioner or Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner.
3) My main goal when I DC is to increase/retain moisture.
I DC once a week (I missed last week because I was traveling!). I use my own mixture of avocados, eggs, coconut, tea tree, peppermint, rosemary oil, extra virgin olive oil, and Honey! This has worked well so far with my hair, I’ve been natural, in a sense, for 6 years.. jus recently stopped straightening it..
I usually try and go for shampoo and DC once a week… i definitely think it’s an important part of a healthy natural hair care regimine. I’ve found that adding Olive Oil to my deep conditioners really helps to keep my hair soft. It’s one of the few oils that is actually able to penetrate our hair. 🙂
1. How ofter do you deep condition? I deep condition twice a week 2. What products do you use? Right now I am in between. I just finished using my Hair Mayo by Organic Root Stimulator but now I’m trying out a cheaper product because I am trying to save money. I’m learning cheaper is not always better. I always use Growth Oil by B&B when I deep condition, not for growth but because it is a great mix of wonderful oils! 3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein? All of the… Read more »
Once a week
Silk Elements Moisturizing Treatment
Increased softness, strength, and moisture
1. usually 1x a week
2. aussie 3 min miracle, lustrasilk cholesterol, AOHSR, or suave almond and shea conditioner mixed with honey and oils..for light protein i use ORS replenishing, but i havent done that in a while
3. moisture
Once a week, using Coconut Milk conditioner. Strength, moisture, and overall hair health is my goal.
1. How often do you deep condition? Weekly. I do a moisturizing treatment every week, and a protein treatment every four to six weeks. So, I do some sort of treatment each time I shampoo.
2. What product(s) do you use? For moisture, Keracare Humetco. For protein, Dudley Hair Rebuilder.
3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein? All of the above.
1. Once or twice a month.
2. Olive oil blended with essential oils (rosemary, lavender, sweet orange, etc.)
3. Moisture, softness, to condition.
I DC once a week and use a cheap store own brand coconut conditioner with olive, jojoba, coconut or almond oil added overnight.
the main plan is to moisturise and condition
1. I DC once a week
2. I mix oyin handmade Honey hemp with AO Honeysuckle rose – it just works for me, and i like to bleed my pockets dry…
3. moisture and softness!
1. Once a week
2. Rosemary oil
3. Strength, moisture, and growth! 🙂
I dc once a week, I use Shea Moisture over nite with a baggie, leaves my hair super soft and moistured.
I usually deep condition weekly. I combine conditioner (lately it’s Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner which I LOOOOOOVE!), coconut oil, and olive oil. Let is sit anywhere from a couple hours up to a couple days depending on how I feel. I don’t really understand the whole protein thing, so I just judge my hair’s health by touch. When I touch it, I want it to feel soft and not dry, from the roots until the ends.
I deep condition once a week using afro detangler, jojoba oil, castor oil, and aloe vera juice. (A modified version of Kim Love’s leave-in conditioner recipe) I DC for all three reasons but mainly for moisture. 🙂
Truthfully, not often enough. I really should do it once a week, especially in the winter.
I’ve been good the past two weeks though and did a protein treatment last week, followed by a DC this week.
Oops, I deep condition for moisture with Blended Beauty Herbal Reconditioner. I’m currently using Aubrey Organics GPB for protein, but when the bottle is gone we’re done. The scent lingers and I find it unpleasant. I generally go for a deeper conditioner when my hair is feeling drier and less springy (elastic) than usual.
1. I deep condition once a week.
2. I mostly use a mixture of bananas, coconut milk, honey, EVOO and EVCO. If I’m in a pinch, I use a mixture of conditioner, honey, EVOO and EVCO.
3. I deep condition for increased moisture retention.
I rotate between a deep conditioner (Elasta QP DPR-11) and reconstructor (Aphogee 2 minute Reconstructor). Most of the time I use a deep conditioner weekly and reconstructor when I feel I need it (hair might be shedding too much, or too much wear and tear).
1. How often do you deep condition?
-I just went natural. But I plan on DC’ing once a week
2. What product(s) do you use?
-Good ol honey and EVOO
3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein?
-All of the above
1. Once a week. I’m determined to keep that up once school resumes.
2. Keracare Humecto. I sacrificed and bought a salon-sized tub of it when I saw how much my hair loved it. It should last me for a while.
3. Moisture. My hair is a hog for it.
I deep condition once a week. I used Elasta QP religiously with olive oil and honey for moisture, my hair is VERY dry.
I recently ran out of Elasta QP and I now use Giovanni’s Deep Smooth as Silk. I use it for moisture, but I believe others use it for strength, my hair is protein sensitive but I found that this product works for me. I still feel like I get the moisture I need, but I get a little protein too.
1. How often do you deep condition?
2. What product(s) do you use?
3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein?
1. How often do you deep condition?
Once every 1-2 weeks
2. What product(s) do you use?
AOHSR, YTC, Lush’s Retread…if I have these on hand. However with at least some honey & coconut oil mixed in to any conditioner my hair is happy
3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein?
I would have to say moisture, because if I give myself a protein treatment I make sure to follow that up with deep conditioning. My hair LOVES this combo.
About every 10 days or so. I will take Oyin’s Honey Hemp condish, add a touch of baking soda, and a little extra honey and olive oil, and let that joint sit up in there for at least an hour…comb thru and rinse!
Once a week
The Organic Root Stimulator hair mayonnaise
well, I’ am still transiting so it is for moisture and softness
I DEEP CONDITION 1 EVERY TWO WEEKS
I USE SHEA MOISTURE RESTORITIVE CONDITIONER AND THE DEEP TREATMENT MASK
I GET MEGA MOISTURE
DC once a week
Once every 3 weeks with a protein treatment then follow with DC
DC-AOHSR with some Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, EVOO
Protein-Egg white and natural yogurt
DC-gives me mega moisture
Protein-strengthens my hair and has given me a fantastic decrease in breakage
Happy hair and an even more happier me!
I deep Condition Once a Week.
Right Now I use the Carol’s Daughter deep conditioners and when I dont have that I use ORS or a plain conditioner with coconut oil, essential oils, and hair mayo
I deep condition for moisture. .. My hair is sooo dry when in a puff…only way I can retain moisture is if I wear it in two strand twists…
I try to deep condition at least weekly. I use Queen Helene’s Cholesterol mixed with ORS Hair Mayo, coconut oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, castor oil, and shea butter. I put it on my hair with the heat cap that I bought and rinse it after 30 minutes.
Once a week. aubrey organics honey suckle rose conditioner mixed with honey and coconut oil.apply to dry or wet hair leave on for 15 min then rinse.
WOW>>> you all deep condition so often.
I deep condition once a month!
I use queen helene cholesterol.
I do it because it’s supposed to fortify my hair against breakage, the elements, and for just overall strength.
Hair type: 4b, kinky/coily…think cotton 😉
I DC once/week with Aubrey’s Organice Honeysuckle Conditoner, I apply it to my dry hair, leave it on then wash and condition again. My DC purpose is for protein and moisture.
i deep condition uhm..wheneve i feel like my hair needs it maybe every 2-3 weeks
and i use a combination of henna-egg-olive oil-nd some type of rinse out conditioner
nd i leave that in for a couple of hours wash it out nd condition with regular rinse-out conditioner nd my hair is sooooooo soft when im done nd my currls are super defined 🙂
I know that this has nothing to do with deep conditioning but i need some serious help with my hair because it has almost been 4 months since I’ve been natural but the right side of my head where my edges are just won’t grow but it isn’t that bad but the left side is just fine but I see it and it bothers me can someone help me please?
you can use castor oil to strengthen your edges…i had the same problem when i BC in january
Never. There is a school of thought that says that deep conditioning is a myth. I think it’s true based on my personal experience. It is a means for companies to charge more for conditioners.
im almost a year bein natural and im dwindling down to my TOP 3 DC’s; i do it for moisture (protein once a month) and overall it just feels good. Miss Jessie’s rapid recovery, Carol’s D Tui smoothie, hairveda sitrinilla (up next to try is darcy’s and shea moisture)
@jules; try massaging in castor oil for the edges and dont put any stress on em like wearing it back in puffs n etc.
Once a week when wearing natural styles
Once every two when flat ironing.
I use Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner and i LOOOOOOOOVE it ever so much. I DC to keep the hair healthy, reduce frizz and to retain length…gotta keep those ends happy and moisturized. 🙂
@ Jules also, try not to sleep mainly on your left. and at night make sure you edges aren’t exposed to the sheets…i know my bonnet tends to slip up while i sleep…
Since I’ve been natural I don’t think I’ve ever deep conditioned my hair. I wash and condition it every week and I haven’t had any major problems. Maybe some dryness after I use a lot of product but that’s about it. Would it benefit me to start?
Probably not lol
I actually don’t. Trying to find a recipe and or products that I can do. My co-washes have had to been my main source of conditioning.
So I have three questions;
1. How often do you deep condition? –Weekly
2. What product(s) do you use?– silicon mix or any protein DC
3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein? Soft yet strong hair (does that make sense?) I alternate between moisture and protein on a week by week baises.
I just started deep conditioning more often – weekly to every two weeks depending on what’s going on in my life — it’s made a big difference in shininess and strength. henna and deep conditioner combo.
Since I live in NY it’s cold and it strips moisture. I condition every week when I wash. And just deep deep condition once a month. I use my homemade conditioner which the base is whipped Shea Butter & Coconut Oil I mix in honey and other oils, then put a conditioner on top. It’s been working for me. I also henna once every 3 months.
I deep condition once/week.
I’ve been experimenting with different DCs, right now I use Cholesterol Aloe Vera, and just this week I mixed it with Honey. I have used egg, and olive oil (for protein), honey and olive oil (heavenly!), and banana, olive oil, and honey (a bit too much, and the bananas left seeds in my hair).
I do it because I need it. I am always complimented on how soft my hair is, and if I don’t DC then it wouldn’t be this soft!
I condition every other day. Is that bad? My hair just feels funny and stiff if i go longer. I try to increase moisture and Im using Organics shea butter condititioner
Are you DCing on wet or dry hair? Before or after shampooing? I’ve seen some people do it different ways, so I’m just wondering.
I have mixed hair. I find if i use deep conditioners that are too heavy like hair mayo and stuff my hair gets really heavy and oily instead of curly and soft. I have been straightening my hair for years and every summer i go natural just to re-cooperate. I deep condition every week with Aussie’s 3 minute miracle deeeep conditioner after i condition and shampoo my hair (make sure you stimulate your scalp by massaging it) with *sulfate free* Organix Morrocan oil Conditioner and Acia Berry Shampoo. My hair smells great and feels really soft! I SOFTLY pat it… Read more »
I deep condition once a month but alternate between protein (homemade), moisture (water, aloe vera, honey and essential oils) and hot oil (olive oil or coconut oil) so I am doing each 4 times year.
I never used to deep condition, but since I have started doing it (as needed, which usually translates to once every week or 2), my hair is much more moisturized and elastic. I was always too lazy to do it, but I make time on the weekends now or start the process as soon as I get home from work. I vary my DC method: Olive Oil or Coconut Oil treatment Janelle’s Beauty Diva Smooth Honey + Olive/Coconut Oil Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque Whichever I choose, it stays on either overnight or for 1-2 hours with a plastic cap… Read more »
1x weekly
Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage Deep Conditioner
Strenght and Moisture
I’ve been doing this since my BC in 7/11 and it has done wonders for my hair…strenght wise, moisture as well as growth.
Would you be involved in exchanging hyperlinks?
I deep condition once a week
The products vaires, right now I am using Bear Fruit Hair (Almond & Shea, I think) I add aloe vera juice, Johoba oil, Castor oil and some lavender EO, sit under my hooded hair dryer for 20mins then rinse.
I am trying to accomplish increased strenght and moisture.
I deep condition ONCE or TWICE a week depending on what my hair feels like. I am a mixer so I tend to mix a standard deep condition with honey and my oils. I have found that most standard deep conditions provide the same coding on the hair. So I don’t spend a lot in this category anymore.
i deep condition once a week. But i now did the big chop i am new to this so my hair still feels fibrous and dry after deep conditioning i use some natural home made deep conditioners and that apple cider rinse makes it feels worse. maybe i am doing something work
wrong…. sorry please leave comments on what to use i have type 4b hair i think its in the the 4’s
My fav would have to be the phyto specific Intense nutrition Mask. Its thick and has great slip but at $25 a bottle it doesn’t last too long. i use it in between cheaper deep conditioners. If you are are interested in trying some new products, check out my blog. Plus I’m giving away over $100 worth of products and accessories.

My hair is about 2inches short, and super dry, so I DC every 5 days. I first mist my hair with a glycerin, aloe vera juice & distilled water concoction, then add a generous amount of raw honey all over my head, cover it up with a plastic bag and rinse it out with cool water 2hours later. Super soft result, my hair loves it 🙂
I want health, length and most definitely soft hair
I DC once a week with a moisturizing conditioner with heat for 30 mins and once a month with a protein cond( Aubrey Organic GPB)
Im a product junkie so my favorites are:
Bee Mine Be-u-ti-full deep cond.
Eden Body work jojoba monoi deep cond
Curl junkie curl rehab
Jessicurl weekly deep treat.
Shea moisture purification masque
I do it for moisture retention so length retention and for hair softness
Where do you get these products and do you use them all together?
no i use once at a time so i rotate weekly. I live in canada so mostly online but i cant get shea moisture at my beauty supply. If you live in the states i know u can buy all those products on http://www.curlmart.com and shea moisture are at target, walgreen, cvs. Eden bodyworks products are at sally, walmart, walgreen. Aubrey organic GPB is at the vitamin shoppe. Hope it helps!
